We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a Quantum Communications Applied Scientist.

Principal Responsibilities

HSBC is accelerating its research effort on developing its quantum capabilities in the domain of quantum-safe communications and quantum networks with a focus on applications within Financial Services. The successful candidate will participate in ongoing research projects and drive research directions in quantum and quantum-safe communications where we can develop and apply advantage guarantees of these protocols for the Group. 

Significant results will be published in peer-reviewed journals and/or patented. This role will have a strong applied focus with an emphasis on delivery, but it will also contain an important research component. This role will also be involved in the strategic collaborative engagements with government, industry and academia. 

This role is part of the Global Digital Innovation team and will offer the successful candidate an incredible opportunity to find commercially viable applications for quantum communications and networks, and quantum-safe solutions. 

The position will be based in Singapore. 

  • Support the general strategy for quantum communications, quantum-safe communications, and quantum networks
  • Lead the generation of new relevant software and hardware solutions in quantum-safe and quantum communications from inception to delivery
  • Contribute to the delivery of ongoing strategic initiatives in these domains
  • Work with business units to ensure successful delivery of results in line with the bank’s best practices
  • Contribute and lead the establishing of new research projects and grants in line with the bank’s objectives and in consultation with the lead for quantum communications and quantum networking
  • Contribute to the establishing of roadmaps for the delivery of quantum and quantum-safe solutions in consultation with the relevant stakeholders
  • Communicate progress and disseminate results
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert for the area
Requirements
  • PhD in Telecommunications, Computer Science/Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Quantum Physics, Mathematics, or related field
  • Master’s degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science/Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Quantum Physics, Mathematics, or related field, accompanied by at least 4 years of experience in a relevant domain
  • R&D experience in classical networking, quantum communications/networking, cybersecurity, quantum cryptography, classical cryptography and/or other relevant domains, whether from a theoretical or an experimental/practical point of view
  • Familiarity with concepts in network architectures, cybersecurity architectures, cloud infrastructure and cryptography (in particular, post-quantum cryptography)
  • At least one published work in a peer-reviewed journal on one of the mentioned topics
