Global Risk is a thriving and expert risk management function supporting HSBC globally with all aspects of risk management. The team actively manages a varied and dynamic range of risk types, including security, fraud, information security, operational, credit, pension, insurance, compliance, regulatory, market, reputation and geopolitical risks.


About the role:


The Compliance function is a Second line of defence (LOD) function, responsible for reviewing and challenging the activities of the Group’s businesses (also referred to as “the First LOD”) to ensure that they effectively manage as “Risk Owners” the Regulatory and Financial Crime Compliance risks inherent in or arising from the conduct of their activities and for which they are responsible. The Second LOD consists of 'Risk Stewards' who are independent of the commercial risk-taking activities undertaken by the First LOD. The Compliance function is a Risk Steward for a number of non-financial risks in accordance with HSBC Group’s risk framework.


The Senior Manager Compliance Personal Banking (PB) is responsible for ensuring that Compliance in HSBC Bank Canada (HBCA) are effective in identifying, managing and mitigating Regulatory Compliance and Financial Crime risks and ensure timely advice is provided to the business.

The role requires strong partnership with the business to drive and accelerate the execution of Compliance programmes that directly impact business performance. This role is accountable for the implementation of policies in to the business and as such it will require close collaboration with various Risk and PB business functions.



  • Support Wealth and Personal Banking (WPB) Compliance Advisory, to maintain an effective control framework and to ensure compliance with all relevant external laws & regulations, internal codes and policies and good market practices.  With primary focus on business areas within Personal Banking for HSBC Bank of Canada (HBCA), HSBC Finance Mortgage inc. (HFMI), and HSBC Mortgage Corporation Canada (HMC).
  • Accountable to provide advice, review, and challenge  Personal Banking First LOD for new initiatives, projects, regulatory and business-led changes, customer communications, marketing, training, and other activities.
  • Support Personal Banking First LOD in risk assessment, issue management, and regulatory reporting.
  • Provide advisory services Personal Banking First LOD in order to ensure clear understanding of compliance risk exposure with respect to clients, transactions and products.
  • The role requires strong partnership with the business and leadership team, interfaces with both Risk and Compliance functions and has responsibility for driving the implementation of policy arising out of changes in Compliance within HBCA and globally.
  • Ensure proactive communication with the business and develop appropriate processes for engagement.  It will be the go-to person for the business to ensure processes are coordinated and implementation risks and issues related to compliance are considered and addressed.
  • To exercise risk steward challenge, act as independent trusted advisory in governance forums, fostering a compliance culture and optimizing relations with risk owners and control owners.
  • To stay at the forefront of key regulatory changes for their region to ensure proactive communication with business.
  • To support the HSBC WPB business to maintain an effective control framework and to ensure compliance with all relevant external laws & regulations, internal codes and policies, and good market practices.
  • Reporting to AVP Compliance Personal Banking as relevant on Regulatory Compliance and Financial Crime and Fraud risks matters. 
  • Liaise with relevant stakeholder within the business in HBCA, other Global Business and Functional teams to provide expertise and support on all Compliance related matters.
  • Manage and foster a strong relationship with all relevant regulators in relation to the activities of HBCA and ensure timely disclosure of relevant information in relation to financial crime and regulatory compliance related matters.
  • Maintain and develop positive and professional working relationships with senior business managers and Compliance colleagues at the Group level.
  • Share Regulatory Compliance and Financial Crime and Fraud risk related compliance knowledge and best practice across HBCA and the wider Compliance Function and Group.

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 6 -10 years of Compliance, Legal, Global Functions and/or Regulatory experience
  • Ability to maintain control, direction and motivation in an ever-changing environment
  • Strong relationship management skills with the ability to manage & engage multiple stakeholders, meet their expectations, negotiate in situations of conflicting interests and influence key decision makers in a positive manner
  • Strong communication and influencing skills – both verbal and written
  • Operates effectively across cultures and in multi-cultural diverse work environments
  • Resourceful - ability to leverage resources available to achieve goals
  • Ability to understand and implement Group risk management policies
  • Proficiency with personal computers and pertinent mainframe systems and software packages
