We are currently seeking a high caliber professional to join our team as CFO, Global Insurance.


Role purpose

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Global Insurance, is a senior executive leadership role responsible for providing financial, strategic, and commercial leadership across HSBC’s Insurance business.

The CFO will ensure sustainable financial growth while optimising the balance sheet, capital, and liquidity deployment across multiple markets with diverse regulatory regimes, accounting/reporting bases, and solvency frameworks. This includes oversight of all aspects of Insurance Finance: financial reporting, capital & liquidity management, actuarial, performance monitoring, risk and control governance, and forward-looking financial planning.

As Chair of the Global Insurance Finance Management Meeting (GIFMM) and a member of the Global Insurance Risk Management Meeting (GIRMM) and Global Insurance Operating Committee (GI OPCO), the CFO plays a pivotal role in shaping strategy, driving disciplined financial management, and maintaining confidence with regulators, Boards, and external stakeholders.

The CFO also manages a large, geographically distributed team across multiple delivery centres, balancing operational complexity with automation and transformation initiatives to improve efficiency and control.


Accountabilities

Business, Customers & Stakeholders

  • Lead the end-to-end financial management of HSBC’s insurance businesses across multiple markets, ensuring robust capital, liquidity, and asset-liability management in compliance with diverse regulatory and solvency requirements.
  • Oversee IFRS17 financial reporting, in-force book profitability, and forward-looking performance in an accurate, timely, controlled and insightful manner.
  • Shape strategic capital allocation across markets and product lines, balancing shareholder returns, dividend capacity, and reinvestment needs, while optimising risk-adjusted performance.
  • Drive reinsurance and hedging strategies to manage risk and enhance capital efficiency across the Group.
  • Provide strategic guidance and updates on insurance performance, emerging risks, opportunities, and market developments.
  • Maintain strong relationships with regulators, auditors, rating agencies, and external stakeholders to ensure confidence in the Group’s financial position and governance.
  • Chair GIFMM, ensuring meaningful, action-oriented debates that enhance decision-making and embed a strong risk and control culture.

Leadership

  • Build, lead, and inspire a world-class global Insurance Finance team with strong technical, commercial, and leadership capabilities.
  • Manage a geographically distributed workforce, including delivery centres and EUC-heavy processes, with responsibility for driving automation, simplification, and transformation initiatives.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, integrity, and high performance.
  • Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion while developing a deep pipeline of future finance leaders across regions and disciplines.
  • Act as a visible role model, setting the tone at the top and embedding a strong risk culture across the Finance function.
  • Promote collaboration across business lines, regions, and Group functions to deliver integrated and effective finance outcomes in a matrixed environment.


Functional Knowledge

  • Oversight of IFRS17 reporting, new business profitability, solvency, and other key metrics.
  • Deep understanding of insurance capital and liquidity frameworks, including multiple regulatory solvency regimes and internal stress testing frameworks.
  • Experience in asset and liability management (ALCM), including hedging and investment strategies aligned with market conditions and risk appetite.
  • Strong command of actuarial principles and their application to pricing, reserving, in-force book management, and reinsurance strategies.
  • Expertise in financial control frameworks, regulatory reporting, risk management, and compliance.
  • Proven ability to integrate emerging technologies and analytical tools to improve Finance decision-making and operational efficiency.
  • Commercially focused, with a track record of driving cost efficiency, simplification, and transformational outcomes in complex global environments.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills to work effectively across geographies and matrix reporting lines
Requirements

  • Anticipates and prepares for industry trends, emerging risks, and regulatory changes with agility and foresight.
  • Operates with unquestionable integrity, cultivating trust and collaboration across complex stakeholder networks.
  • Resilient, optimistic, and adaptive in fast-changing, high-pressure environments.
  • Significant senior leadership experience within international life insurers, ideally as CFO or equivalent executive role.
  • Professional qualification in accountancy or actuarial science, with proven oversight of both actuarial and finance functions.
  • Demonstrated track record in multi-market, multi-regime insurance finance management, ideally with experience in key Asia markets (Hong Kong, Singapore, China, India).
  • Strong technical knowledge of IFRS17, capital management, stress testing, risk frameworks, and actuarial concepts.
  • Experience engaging regulators, Boards, and external stakeholders with credibility, influence, and strategic insight

  • Often required to attend GAC and other Asia committees (e.g. INED)
The chosen candidate for this role will be required to undergo enhanced vetting. Subject to local laws, this will require the individual to satisfactorily pass a series of additional checks as part of the recruitment process and on an ongoing basis, if appointed to the role.
