We are offering an exciting and challenging opportunity of Chief Operating Officer (COO) HSBC Malta, with direct responsibility for the Group’s operations in Malta. 

The mandate incorporates Entity Risks and Controls, Operations, Corporate Real Estate, Corporate Security, Technology, IT Operations, Procurement and Third party management, Data Management, Transformation and CAO office.

In this role, you will be responsible for supporting and owning COO-related matters of the ongoing strategic review of the business model, which includes large scale WPB and CIB businesses, and subsequent implementation of the review.

The COO role reports to the HSBC Malta CEO and functionally to the HSBC Continental Europe & CIB COO and will form close working relationships with Lines of Business Heads, Global Function Heads and CIB.

The HSBC Country COO is positioned as a key role in the senior management layer within Country. The COO is considered a Key Function Holder as per EBA guidelines. The COO is a member of the Market Executive Committee and is responsible for the execution of the global strategy in the market and input on the operationalization of the strategic design alongside managing costs, risks and controls, Ops resilience and business continuity, and crisis management of the Entity. The Country COO is responsible for ensuring the effective operations of the bank and driving the delivery of professional services to enable seamless bank operations. This role has accountability for ensuring Country compliance with all local regulatory requirements relevant to the function. HSBC Bank Malta p.l.c. is a public listed company regulated by the Joint Supervisory Team (JST) comprising the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) and the European Central Bank (ECB). The COO is also a key member in various in country governance forums.

About the role: 
This senior leadership role will support the CEO of HSBC Malta and the HBCE CIB COO in operational management and strategic execution across the Maltese businesses and with delegated responsibility from HBCE COO on Malta matters.

The role purpose is to ensure the operational integrity and resilience of HSBC Malta (HBMT) and to drive a complex transformation in the context of the ongoing strategic review in the market.
The role holder’s key objectives will be to oversight and delivery of professional services to enable seamless operations, to ensure quality of services & processes provided to our customers, to drive services transformation for Malta, and to transition the entity constructs to its strategic target end-state.

The role holder’s main responsibilities will include:
  • The management of all COO activities for the entity as a systematic bank in Malta
  • The execution of Group and Local strategies across HSBC Malta, also in the context of the ongoing strategic review, understanding the impact on the customers and businesses and prioritizing transformation activity in order to mitigate any risks
  • The responsibility of ensuring the effective operations of the bank and compliance with all local regulatory & legal requirements
  • Overall responsibility for managing and ensuring the operational continuity and resilience of the internal operations and technology
  • The building of close working relationships across the management teams, including WPB and CIB business heads and product lines within the region in addition to the wider COO network and Global Functions

To be successful in the role, you should meet the following requirements:
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the external environment within country, regulatory, political, competitor and market
  • Outstanding relationship management, interpersonal, communication skills; the ability to negotiate and influence across networks of matrixed stakeholders to achieve agreed outcomes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Operations, Global Markets, CIB and WPB propositions; functionally, operationally and financially
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technology development and infrastructure, technology Risks and Controls applied to meet business needs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Data Management, Data Risks and Controls applied to meet business needs
  • Experience of operating in an environment of constantly changing priorities, challenging bureaucracy and staying true to the values and strategy of the Group
  • Proven experience in management and control of complex global programmes / large-scale business transformation
  • Well-developed knowledge of operational, non-financial risk and control framework management
  • Have held a senior leadership position, ideally within a global banking environment
