The Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Capital Markets & Advisory (CMA) in the Americas holds a critical leadership role in supporting and growing the business both strategically and operationally day to day across the region. The role is multi-functional crossing all COO disciplines and applies expert industry/product knowledge front to back. It is a key partner to the Regional CMA Head to deliver the business strategy as well as facilitating the business front to back within risk appetite. 
The role holder will lead or represent CMA in global and regional management forums including those related to Strategy, Risk, People and Transformation, as well as being able to lead discussions with regulators as required.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities across Business, Clients and Stakeholders:

Strategy

  • Partner the Head of Americas Capital Markets & Advisory to design and execute the strategy in line with local markets, regulators and the Stay Safe agenda

  • Ensure cohesive alignment with global objectives, while addressing regional market dynamics and product capabilities

  • Contribute to the critical evaluation of the CMA business opportunities with reference to HSBC’s core strengths and the competitive focus on debt financing

  • Represent HSBC / CMA at internal and external conferences, workshops and forums

Execution

  • Set Operational strategy and standards for CMA, in partnership with the Head of Americas CMA Americas, and in close conjunction with the CMA COO team globally

  • Facilitate the provision of timely and insightful internal and external metrics (revenue, wallet, cost, controls etc) as required for the Americas to track progress against strategic execution, ensuring that there is consistency with and leverage of Global metrics

  • Support formulation of the regional revenue & wallet share targets, targets, workforce plan (FTE) and costs, in collaboration with CMA COO globally

  • Oversee day to day operations, regularly review effectives and efficiency of delivery.  Drive innovation as well as continuous improvement; provide constructive challenge where needed to ensure adoption of global consistency and simplification in policies & procedures

  • Lead collaboration initiatives as appropriate with other parts of CMA, CIB and HSBC Group, eg. Regions, Private Wealth and Asset Management

  • Prepare townhalls, QBRs, board presentations, Leadership Team papers, Leadership Team meetings, marketing and comms, aligned with Global strategy to ensure clear communication of the CMA and CIB strategy across stakeholder groups 

Transformation

  • Partnership with technology and business stakeholders, define the Americas CMA transformation programme to i) automate / digitise / simplify, ii) deliver on regulatory commitments and iii) drive the growth in strategic areas

  • Ensure programmes align with CMA and the Group’s broader transformation strategies, leveraging existing workstreams where relevant. This includes the drive to Future State Architecture and Value Streams through the HSBC Digital Acceleration Programme. This also includes application demise and driving lower total cost of ownership

Risk Management & Governance

  • Maintain a relentless focus on the “stay safe” agenda, demonstrating a deep understanding and high awareness of regional operational, information, regulatory and other non-financial risks facing the business

  • Partner closely with Business and Second line risk functions to maintain a robust financial and operational risk environment, where the business operates in compliance with all applicable policies, laws and regulations, ensure compliance with regulatory mandated local variances, and apply appropriate and effective governance frameworks

  • Ensure effective governance structures and processes are in place across all products and regions

  • Support engagement with regulators on behalf of CMA, in full partnership with Business Risk, Regulatory Compliance and relevant CMA & Group colleagues

Leadership

  • Oversee Talent Development initiatives across the region, in conjunction with the CMA Leadership team, including annual performance management and people year-end processes

  • Lead across the CMA COO and oversee own-managed headcount to support high performance delivery

  • Cultivate a high performing team environment and culture through people development, talent recruitment and retention, objective setting, performance management, and continuous feedback and guidance for team members

For this role, HSBC targets a pay range between $180,000.00 and $220,000.00.

The final fixed pay offer will depend on the candidate and a number of variables, including but not limited to, role responsibilities, skill set, depth of experience and education, licensing/certification requirements, internal relativity, and specific work location.

Requirements

You´ll likely have the following qualifications to succeed in this role:

  • Excellent knowledge of CMA related products and understanding of macro-trends that impact the business as well as ability to identify solutions to remain competitive

  • Experience in COO roles and partnership of HSBC OpCo-1 and -2 level stakeholders to define and execute business strategy

  • Very strong analytical and presentation skills, with excellent grasp of PowerPoint / excel / word and ability to distil large quantities of information into key themes / issues and recommendations and excellent English language capabilities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with capacity to work with senior teams and ability to interact at all levels of the organization

  • Clear understanding of statutory and regulatory requirements and can ensure the highest global standards of control apply across CMA

  • Ability to work independently, multi-task, filter information and prioritize multiple demands
