Model Risk Management (MRM) at HSBC is a global function, headed by the Chief Model Risk Officer (CMRO), and reports directly to the Group Chief Risk and Compliance Officer (GCRCO), ensuring independence from model development and ownership teams.
We’re looking for a Vice President to join the Product Control Independent Model Validation team in Krakow (Global Service Centre, Poland). In this specialist quantitative role, you’ll carry out independent validations across HSBC’s model landscape, providing robust challenge on theoretical assumptions, implementation, and business usage—helping ensure models are fit for purpose and aligned to internal and supervisory expectations.
What you’ll do
- Independently execute end-to-end model validations in line with the Global Model Risk Policy, including assessment of:
- model inputs, calculations and reporting outputs
- conceptual soundness and underlying theory
- suitability for intended use
- data relevance/completeness, qualitative judgements, documentation and implementation
- Lead validation activities and take responsibility for overall quality of reviews, including coordinating contributions from junior resources.
- Design, develop and execute testing frameworks tailored to model complexity to identify risks and limitations.
- Develop and implement advanced validation methodologies and tools to improve validation efficiency and effectiveness.
- Discuss and negotiate validation outcomes with model developers and business owners, including issues, limitations and remediation actions; defend conclusions when required.
- Support engagement with Group Internal Audit on model-related audits, MSIIs and audit issues.
- Contribute to local MRM initiatives (e.g., Learning & Development sessions, automation/efficiency improvements).
- Stay up to date with industry best practices, academic research and evolving regulatory expectations in model risk management.
- Participate in governance forums and, where required, support regulatory engagements to evidence robust independent challenge.
What you need to have to succeed in this role
- 3+ years’ hands-on experience in development, implementation, validation, or independent review of Product Control models (Fair Value Adjustments, Prudent Valuation/AVA, hedge accounting, and XVA including CVA/DVA, FCA, FBA, OCS).
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative field such as Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, Finance, or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience of model validation.
- Deep understanding of financial products, markets, and relevant quantitative modelling techniques for the specific domain.
- Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills with an ability to identify and address complex model issues.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of explaining complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
Nice to have:
- Good understanding of regulatory requirements regarding model development and validation (e.g., PRA, OCC/FRB, EBA, HKMA, UAE).
- Strong knowledge of risk models, performance metrics, and associated model risks/issues.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to defend conclusions.
- Team-oriented mindset with ability to deliver independently to a high-quality standard.
- (Advantage) Strong knowledge of internal procedures.
