The Opportunity:
The Head of Direct Custody and Regional Head of Securities Services Development Centre – China is a senior technology leader and strategic owner of the Direct Custody sub value stream, accountable for the end-to-end technology strategy, architecture evolution, engineering execution, and business partnership across Direct custody Services.
As part of the Future Custody vision, this role is pivotal in integrating and modernising Direct Custody & Clearing (DCC), enabling a unified, scalable, client-centric platform underpinned by digital technologies.
The successful candidate will be a recognised engineering leader, a proven driver of value stream-led transformation, and an experienced partner to senior business stakeholders—particularly in delivering complex custody platforms, digitised asset solutions, and client onboarding journeys at global scale. They will be expected to demonstrate modern engineering instincts, champion DevOps and AI-first practices, and be capable of guiding both business and technology stakeholders through large-scale transformation.
This individual will also act as the Regional Head of the Securities Services Development Centre in China. This is a senior role responsible for the strategic, operational and delivery leadership of the regional development hub. The role plays a critical part in driving the technology innovation, talent growth, agile delivery and alignment with the CIB and Securities Services IT strategy. Operating as the senior-most technology leader within the regional centre, this individual is accountable for shaping a high-performing engineering and product development environment, ensuring the delivery of robust, scalable and secure technology solutions across multiple business domains (e.g. banking, asset management, fintech or insurance), while maintaining strong connectivity with global stakeholders.
What you’ll do:
Direct Custody Technology
Provide technology leadership for Direct Custody platforms supporting Asia’s sub-custody operations
Own and deliver the platform roadmap including modernization, cloud-native design, and AI/LLM tools
Drive Agile, CI/CD, and DevOps best practices
Partner with Product, Operations, and Regional Leaders
Ensure platform stability and performance
Serve as escalation and control owner
Regional Development Centre Role
Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration: As the senior most technology representative in the region, the role ensures strong alignment between the development centre and global stakeholders-including business leaders, CIO/CTO communities, transformation programmes and enterprise product owners. The Head builds trusted partnerships to –co create roadmaps, align priorities and deliver regionally relevant solutions. The role also acts as a cultural and strategic bridge between China-based teams and global headquarters, ensuring seamless integration and mutual understanding.
Centre Governance and Compliance: The role is accountable for establishing and maintaining robust governance, risk and control frameworks within the development centre. This includes ensuring regulatory compliance, particularly with local data and cybersecurity laws and overseeing all aspects of audit readiness, internal controls and operational resilience. The regional Head leads business continuity planning and proactively manages enterprise risks associated with technology development and operations.
Talent and Capability Development: A key responsibility is leading the regions technology talent strategy. That includes attracting, developing and retaining top engineering product and QA talent while fostering a high-performance culture rooted in Agile values and continuous learning. The Head oversees leadership development, career frameworks and capability uplift initiatives and works closely with HR and global centres of excellence to build a sustainable and inclusive talent pipeline.
Technology Delivery and Engineering Excellence: The regional Head ensures the timely and high-quality of digital and technology solutions from the centre. They drive engineering excellence through adoption of Agile methodologies, DevSecOps practices, CI/CD automaton and architectural standardisation. A core accountability is ensuring delivery, velocity, platform consistency and cost efficiency across multiple product domains whilst enabling reusable capabilities and reducing technical debt.
Performance, Metrics and Value Realisation: The role defines and tracks performance metrics that reflect the value and impact of the development centre, including delivery throughput, team productivity, quality indicators and stakeholder satisfaction. The regional Head ensures the centre contributes meaningfully to enterprise-level KPIs and delivers demonstrable outcomes that support both global technology strategy and regional business goals.
Essential
15+ years in financial services technology; 5+ years in senior leadership
Experience in custody/post-trade systems and transformation
Familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD, AI/ML, and LLMs
Strong stakeholder management and global experience
Fluent in English; Mandarin a plus
Desirable
Experience scaling development centres in Asia
Familiarity with global custody platforms
Experience integrating AI/LLM into engineering workflows
