What you will do: 
Ensures the provision of independent, objective audit services over risks and processes relating to HBCE.  This includes delivery of the plans for the HBCE audit team as well as coordination of coverage from other audit teams impacting HBCE.  The role is a member of the GIA Managing Director leadership team and reports to the head of Global Banking and Markets & HBEU Audit (SMF5).  The role is a member of the HBCE ExCo and attends the HBCE Audit and Risk Committees. The role is the primary audit contact for HBCE regulators, including the European Central Bank. This role is a Material Risk Taker role.   

In this role you will:

  • Report to the Head of GBM & HBEU Audit and CEO HBCE
  • Is a key member of the HBCE Executive Committee.
  • The role holder should demonstrate the leadership capabilities associated with an HSBC Senior Executive.
  • Individual must be a seasoned, credible person with excellent management skills and diplomacy to be effective in sensitive situations. Must have proven ability to balance firmness and tact to manage potentially difficult situations. 
  • Must be aware of the fast-changing external economic and financial services environment, as well as changes within the HSBC Group, affecting auditors, staff morale and the risk profile(s) of the businesses covered by the audit unit.  
  • Must have the ability to quickly assess inherent risks and an understanding of the Group’s controls in order to assess the residual risk in comparison to the Group’s risk appetite. 
  • The position holder should have a proactive disposition and confidence to escalate potential changes in residual risk that have been identified before the Group is exposed to unnecessary reputational, regulatory or financial losses. 
  • The position holder must have an inquisitive mind and be able to show leadership in an unstructured environment. 

Principle Accountabilities:

Impact on the Business

  • Formulate and update detailed, risk-based audit plans in respect of the coverage of the risk function and finance function.
  • Oversee the follow-up, tracking and reporting of material issues to ensure timely remediation.   
  • Provide the co-ordination and visibility of the audit function to the HBCE CEO and HBCE Board and any relevant committee as required.
  • Engage with relevant regulators across all parts of the group including the ECB, as required.
  • As a senior leader in GIA, oversee the implementation of GIA strategy for the HBCE Function including data analytical capabilities which meets regulatory expectation and represents industry leading practice.
  • Evaluate and critique business strategy, providing a well-informed audit perspective on business direction and key initiatives.

Customers / Stakeholders

  • Develop and maintain ongoing, consistent interaction with executive management and key internal/external stakeholders including regulators.  
  • Maintains expert knowledge of stakeholder requirement, competitor activities and market trends in their areas of expertise which can influence the direction of the Audit function.
  • Ensure Audit services are provided as appropriate to internal and external client needs, liaising as required with external auditors and regulators.

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Set a clear vision for the HBCE audit team as part of the Audit function that is valued by HSBC and recognized in the market and energetically drives the team toward that vision.  
  • Lead and motivates an effective, professional team, guiding and mentoring employees as necessary.
  • Proactive interaction with other Audit and business executives and teams (internally and externally) to understand overarching regional and Global Audit issues, leverage ideas and ensure consistent product, service and process.

Operational Effectiveness & Control

  • Has a comprehensive understanding of HSBC operational risk policies and internal control procedures, to ensure that these are properly considered in discharging responsibilities.
  • Identify areas where changes are required to GIA methodology practices and coverage to comply with regulatory requirements or industry best practice.
  • Manages costs within the parameters of the AOP and ensures that all customer metrics are met.
  • Identifies opportunities and drives change initiatives within their area of responsibility.
  • Oversees development of management and administrative procedures to ensure adherence to Group policies and manage operational risk.
Requirements

You should apply if you have: 

  • Extensive prior experience at senior management levels with proven & progressive business, audit and/or accounting experience.
  • Experience at a senior level in both an Internal Audit or relevant business/functional area.
  •  Minimum of a bachelor’s degree and professional certification (ACA, ACCA, CPA or CIA) preferred. 
  • Strong managerial, communications, analytical, problem-solving, organizational, lateral thinking and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the Group and financial services industry, businesses supported and the regulatory framework they operate in. Strategic thinker with deep knowledge of financial services.
  • Willingness to travel regionally
  • Ability to work effectively across a complex global matrixed environment.
  • Understanding of data analytics usage for audit coverage
