The Traded Risk Management function is responsible for the oversight of Market Risk arising from trading activities, ensuring HSBC operate within risk appetite while optimizing returns. 

The role holder will be responsible for:

  • Lead Traded Risk Management across HBEU for HSBC, setting appropriate risk limits, approving new products, monitoring traded risk-taking activity (even when under limits) and managing the systems infrastructure involved in delivering these controls. 
  • Maintain the allocation of risk appetite for market and counterparty credit risk across the region including pro-active management of RWA 
  • Liaise with Regulators/ Rating Agencies where applicable and represent Traded Risk on selective committees. 
  • Be the principal risk stakeholder for the Head of MSS for HBEU.

Accountabilities for Business, Customers and Stakeholders

  • Setting appropriate risk limits, including counterparty credit risk activity, and ensuring that market risk appetite is not exceeded within HSBC's regional risk-taking activity
  • Provide Head of MSS for HBEU with expert advice on traded risk related topics to enable decision making with regards to positions.
  • Represent Traded Risk at the relevant regional governance meetings and identify related Top and Emerging Risks for escalation to the Risk Management Meeting of the bank (executive committee with board representatives).
  • Monitoring of traded risk positions with respect to market conditions, regardless of whether close or in excess of limits.
  • Reviewing new products and structures to identify all material market risks and ensuring effective controls surround these to ensure appropriate risk management occurs during their life cycle.
  • Continue to integrate the market risk approach into the Group Traded risk infrastructure and develop it into a best of class traded risk team.
  • Embed Senior Manager Regime requirements across the TR sub-function.
  • Be the main risk stakeholder for Head of MSS HBEU in providing advice and recommendation on traded risk related topic. To facilitate this key relation, the regional head of Traded Risk sits on the London dealing room among the management office.
  • Be part of the management team of CRCO CIB & HBEU, issue recommendation on acceptable deal structure and provide insight in efficient risk mitigation for counterparty credit risk.
  • Be part of the Global & CIB Head of Traded Risk’s management team and ensure that the region is supportive the strategy and standards established by Group Traded Risk.
  • Represent the bank in the UK for all matter involving Traded Risk, including CA meetings where the PRA is assessing appropriateness of the bank risks vs the established regulatory framework.

Leadership & Teamwork  

  • Work effectively with the Regional traded risk heads and also Global Asset class traded risk heads.
  • Ensure Regional Traded Risk provides the right level of value added to trading businesses through ensuring the correct balance of commercial traded risk management activity and of traded risk limit monitoring and other official risk monitoring activity
  • Ensure that Traded Risk is integrated into all relevant functions and that a collegiate approach is taken to solving issues, building businesses and achieving target returns
  • Facilitate the integration of the Regional Market and Counterparty Credit Risk teams
Requirements

Functional Knowledge

Traded Risk Management

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Market & Counterparty Risk framework. Understanding of FRTB, SA-CVA & all other related regulatory requirements. Ability to oversee collateral management, netting agreements and XVA adjustments.
  • In depth knowledge In-depth knowledge of Basel III/IV, EMIR, MiFID II, and local regulations. Experience in leading audits, remediation, and capital optimization** initiatives. Familiarity with climate risk disclosures (e.g., TCFD) and ESG integration into trading risk.  
  • Balance Sheet & Capital Management. Ability to optimize Risk-Weighted Assets (RWA) and liquidity metrics (LCR, NSFR).  Strategic oversight of trading book profitability vs. risk appetite.  

Experience

  • Working across all levels of the organization to understand cross-functional linkages and interdependencies, as well as the implications of risk at both a strategic level and at the business unit level. 
  • Exposure to demanding operational environments to gain insight into effective risk management applications
  • Experience of creating and leading a sizeable team and of effecting strategic change
  • Network across HSBC Group & the Banking industry
  • Good knowledge of vanilla and complex derivative markets products and relevant traded markets. 
  • Has developed a high level of professional competence which helps to determine solutions around appropriate risk measures, risk processes, risk monitoring and management. 
  • Good understanding of other areas e.g. Credit, Finance, Accounting, Operational, Legal, etc.

  • Implementation of effective processes & systems supporting risk strategy
  • Encourage efficient and streamlined market processes, including providing guidance to Global Traded risk frameworks
  • Maintain cost discipline, rationalize and consolidate Risk expense
  • Ensure that the effectiveness of Internal Control activity is properly monitored
  • Ensure market risk model monitoring/ oversight is effective and appropriate
  • Traded risk systems – Implementation/upgrade/ maintenance
  • To implement the Group Compliance Policy by managing compliance risk in liaison with Regional Global Compliance ensuring adequate compliance resources are in place and training is provided, fostering a compliance culture and optimising relations with regulators
