The Opportunity:
Strategy Director is a key role responsible for designing and executing the strategic direction of the bank’s Shared Services operations..This is a senior leadership position within Central Operations and the GSCs and will be responsible in managing stakeholders, designing and delivering a range of complex strategic initiatives. The role holder will work closely with GCOO office, Operations COO and Centre Directors to design and drive the overall strategy. The role extends in anticipating business and customer requirements, designing new process improvement delivery models, target operating models and delivering technology solutions & be directly responsible for delivering transformation linked to Objective and Key Results (OKRs) & 4C+S (Customer, Colleague, Cost, Control and Scalability). The role will work with Transformation to Portfolio Manage the Change book of Work and ensure this meets strategic outcomes.
Strategy Director
Leading the design and development of the overall strategy, strategic initiatives for Central Operations and Shared Services
Ownership and coordination of the cross line of business and function multiyear bank wide operations strategy and transformation business case.
Identify opportunities to expand the remit of Shared Services which act as utilities for the Group.
Development of a Central Ops ‘strategic planning’ capability, bringing together multi-year CTB and virtual FRP prioritisation and outer year planning.
Owning overall GSCs Strategy to ensure GSCs are on the path of growth and relevance to support Central Operations and Shared Services.
Designing future operating model of GSCs and supporting Bank’s pivot into value Streams from the GSC standpoint to support the Group’s change agenda.
Development and tracking of OKRs across Shared Services, interpreting outcomes to address areas of concern and to ensure enhancements are made where necessary.
Expand the use of market research and (external and internal) benchmarking to build insights and identify opportunities.
Portfolio Governance:
Define portfolio strategy and influence stakeholders to agree on budget, schedule, and resources to deliver scope. Collaborate with Senior leadership across Business, Technology and Operations to define and deliver large scale/ organization wide programs in support of the portfolio backlog
Facilitate the governance around portfolio investment allocations, benefit projections & a holistic view of the financial performance and ensure those are in line with defined Portfolio strategy, customers & business outcomes managing Portfolio / Programme resource capacity. Oversee and manage activities related to transformation resource planning and allocation management for the Portfolio.
Take measures to provide oversight of Risks, Issues and Dependencies and their resolution at portfolio and initiative levels through appropriate tracking and involving key members of the portfolio transformation team.
Responsible for ensuring progress against the portfolio outcomes & deliverables, looking ahead and removing roadblocks to delivery.
Develop communication and reporting strategy, coordinate between stakeholders for progress review key decisions, documentation and approvals
Responsible for ensuring that the portfolio team follows all quality assurance processes, the groups tooling strategies and use standard tools such as Clarity / JIRA /Confluence / GPDM
Drive portfolio control monitoring activities that monitor quality and adherence to the standards, ensuring compliance to HSBC Change Framework, HSBC Functional Instruction Manuals, SAFE, AGILE etc.
Role Context:
The jobholder is required to work in an environment of significant ambiguity and will likely to be delegated to deal with issues for which there is no clear solution whilst being able to provide judgment and clear direction.
They must also:
Work relatively independently and have the gravitas and acumen to consult with business management.
Be self-motivated and driven but able to manage and work in a team whenever required.
Be easily accessible and available to support business stakeholder and leadership needs.

What you’ll do:
Reporting and Governance
Ownership of operations strategy executive reporting including executive presentations and papers covering:
Shared Service Programme wide governance of the operations strategy (adhering to bank’s change framework and audit requirements),
Defining and coordinating the development of the necessary KPIs to track and monitor the implementation of the Central Ops Shared Serivce strategy,
Ensuring effective communication and promotion of the Central Ops and Shared Services strategy (aligning it with the Bank’s, Global Businesses’ and Global Functions’ strategies).

Execution and implementation of strategic initiatives against plan.
Pro-active identification of material issues and themes and remedial action undertaken to ensure addressed – escalating where necessary.
Programme forum engagement and outcomes.
Enhanced awareness and engagement with the bankwide operations strategy and core initiatives.
Strategy and Operating Model:
Ownership and coordination of the cross line of business and function multi-year bankwide operations strategy and transformation business case, incl. CTB and gross saves profile (2023-27).
Lead for Operating Model / Strategic discovery, design, and initiation projects relating to Central Ops, Shared Services and the GSCs.
Development of a Central Ops ‘scenario modelling’ capability, bringing together multi-year CTB prioritisation and outer year planning (OpEx & End State Workforce) in line with revised processes from Group Strategy, Group Finance, GTO, and HR.
Typical Targets and Measures:
Central Ops-wide business case (multi-year).
Prioritised multi-year Central Ops transformation roadmap.
OpEx and End State Workforce model, including ability to scenario plan (linked to CTB funding) to inform FRP.
Insights and opportunities:
Expand the use of market research and (external and internal) benchmarking to build insights and identify opportunities.

Play a key role in helping the businesses and functions define their operational problem statements, agree a strategy and core objectives, and mobilise initiatives – challenging business perceptions where required.
Ensure the right ‘exam question’ is being answered whilst dealing with ambiguity in a sensible manner.
Work effectively within a complex matrix environment and keeping constant dialogue with other parts of the bank which might present conflicting views and ambitions and carve out a succinct plan for the future state of bankwide and DBS operations – aligning to overall Business goals.
Management of Risk:
The jobholder will ensure the fair treatment of our customers is at the heart of everything we do, both personally and as an organisation.
The jobholder will also continually reassess the operational risks associated with the role and inherent in the business, taking account of changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, management restructurings, and the impact of new technology.
This will be achieved by ensuring all actions take account of the likelihood of operational risk occurring. Also, by addressing any areas of concern in conjunction with entity management and/or the appropriate department.
Observation of Internal Controls:
The jobholder will also adhere to and be able to demonstrate adherence to internal controls. This will be achieved by adherence to all relevant procedures, keeping appropriate records and, where appropriate, by the timely implementation of internal and external audit points, including issues raised by external regulators.
This will be achieved by adhering to all relevant processes/procedures and by liaising with Compliance department about new business initiatives at the earliest opportunity. Also and when applicable, by ensuring adequate resources are in place and training is provided, fostering a compliance culture and optimising relations.
What you will need to succeed in the role:
Experienced financial services / management consultant with strategy experience or similar.
Graduate level education from a top tier university, preferably a degree in Finance / Banking / Economics or similar.
Excellent understanding or ability to quickly learn HSBC structures, processes and objectives across the Group.
Outstanding knowledge of banking operations structure and dynamics, across lines of business and functions.
Strong interpersonal skills and possess the ability to develop relationships, collaborate with and influence stakeholders from all levels in the organisation and across geographies and cultures.
Assertive with the ability to work with others to ensure delivery within the required timelines.
Strong financial modelling, management, and oversight skills.
Analytical reasoning and excellent problem-solving ability in complex ambiguous situations.
Experienced in leading and developing high-performing teams.
Experienced in working with and managing senior bank executives (GB/GF CEOs/COO/CIOs).
Experienced in delivering board and executive level materials (presentations and papers).
Excellent MS Office Skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
