Global Risk is a thriving and expert risk management function supporting HSBC globally with all aspects of risk management. The team actively manages a varied and dynamic range of risk types, including security, fraud, information security, contingency, geopolitical, operational, credit, pension, insurance, market and reputation risks. All parts of the Global Risk team use their skills, insight and integrity to handle established threats and those they see emerging, acting to protect and enable HSBC to deliver sustainable growth.

We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a  Senior Credit Manager, Wholesale Credit Risk.

Principal Responsibilities

The Job Holder covers regional wholesale credit approvals for Hong Kong/ Greater China and is a primary source of contact for local Risk units / business teams in those areas.

He/she is responsible for:

  • Reviewing / recommending / approving corporate/financial institutions credit proposals from these areas in accordance with authorised credit limits, including IOAs / transactional requests
  • Promotion of prudent lending principles to ensure strong asset quality and to minimise credit losses

In order to perform the role to the required standard, the job holder must have / maintain / ensure the following:

  • Maintain sound credit quality in line with the Group's / HBAP’s core credit culture - conservative, constructive and competitive
  • A thorough understanding of Credit Policy Manuals and Country Risk Plans and how these can be aligned with strategic / Medium Term Outlooks is essential
  • Be fully conversant with current area balance sheet and P&L issues and other financial / credit / regulatory constraints such as Single Borrower Limits / cross border exposure limits and industry caps
  • Ensure that all applications, whether in the form of firm proposals or IOAs, are processed within agreed service level timeframes
  • Ensure proposals are well prepared prior to submission to senior management and/or Group Risk
  • Proactively identify and highlight emerging risk issues

In addition the job holder is required to:

  • Maintain a strong relationship with local Risk Heads, Business Heads and relationship teams
  • Visit his/her areas from time to time to improve understanding and communication between Asia Pacific Risk and the areas.  The job holder should provide best practice feedback, and review portfolio management & functional aspirational targets to highlight any credit / environmental / reputational issues arising
  • Facilitate / encourage smooth interaction between Risk, Business and Product teams at all times
  • Provide advice and guidance to sites during the preparation of local site’s policies and country risk plans
  • Working with local Risk, the job holder has responsibility to ensure that the required monitoring of the use of local limits of authority is strictly implemented and that there are no instances where local authorities are exceeded
  • Provide value added input to periodic reviews of BIMs, FIMs and other Group policies and guidelines
  • Prepare and evaluate respective site / sector/ product specific strategy papers as and when required
  • Be aware of training requirements in the areas, and provide practical guidance / assistance as and when required
  • Identify operational risk issues, and proactively suggest means by which they can be addressed
  • Ensure lending decisions are in line with HSBC's Sustainability Risk & Climate Risk policies and that reputational risks are avoided
  • Where required, participate in expert review and challenge of results from Climate Risk Stress Tests (e.g. Group Internal Climate Scenario Analysis or HKMA Climate Risk Stress Tests) for counterparties where the job holder was involved as the credit reviewer
Requirements

Experience

  • Exposure to demanding operational environments to gain insight into effective risk management applications
  • Working across all levels of the organization to understand cross-functional linkages and interdependencies, as well as the implications of credit and other risks at both a strategic level and at the Global Business level
  • Good understanding of HSBC overall business dynamics
  • Experience of creating and leading a team and driving forward under a strategic framework with demonstrated results
  • Has developed a high level of professional competence which helps to determine risk-based solutions

Skills

  • Credit risk experience in the relevant lines of Businesses (CMB, GB including FIs/Banks) and geographic areas (HK Greater China)
  • Understand the global and regional strategies of the Group and collaborates with Businesses to execute the strategies
  • Ability to form effective relationships and achieve influence at the senior level in the organization
  • Communication and interpersonal skills, including the capacity to articulate the case for risk management in the language of business
  • Understand and interpret complex business requirements
  • Proven ability to prioritize competing demands
  • Demonstrated ability to assess risk trends, both internally and externally
  • High levels maturity, resilience, sharp negotiation and communication skills
  • Established financial and accounting acumen
