Global Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organization through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all global businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join this team in the role of Assistant Legal Counsel.

Responsibilities: 

  • To provide legal advice, guidance and support in assigned areas to ensure that the Group’s exposure to legal risk is managed effectively.
  • To assist the AGC, Senior Legal Counsel and General Counsel as required from time to time.
  • Ability to prioritize workloads in terms of legal risk and commercial consideration.
  • Maintain knowledge of HSBC Group operations and policies.
  • Ability to handle tasks with less supervision.
  • Enhanced relationship with higher levels of management inspiring confidence of customers/stakeholders.
  • The jobholder assists the General Counsel Malaysia Legal, the Associate General Counsel, the Legal Counsels and colleagues in the WPB business and other Functions to manage legal risk across MYH in accordance with established policies and procedures. The diversity of HSBC’s business, its geographic spread and the constant changes internally and in the external legal and regulatory environment means the diversity of matters which the jobholder is required to manage and advise on is very wide.
  • The role requires an understanding of the structure of the HSBC Group and its culture and the ability to handle increasingly complex legal issues.
  • The jobholder must also establish close mutually supportive working relationships with other members of the MYH Legal team and the Global Legal Function;
  • Works under the supervision of the Associate General Counsel but will work independently on routine matters. 
  • Demonstrate leadership on Regulatory & Compliance matters. Maintain awareness of operational risk (and specifically, legal risk) and minimize the likelihood of it occurring including its identification, assessment, mitigation and control, loss identification and reporting in accordance with Group Operations FIM.  
Requirements
  • Minimum Degree qualification preferred and possessing five to ten years of experience and knowledge in a related field.
  • Qualified lawyer.
  • Ability to prioritise.
  • Developing ability to influence.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Developing lateral thinking / problem solving skills.
  • Good inter-personal skills and ability to build relationships across business lines and within Legal.
  • Wide knowledge and experience of banking, corporate and securities law concepts and a working knowledge of the laws in the major jurisdictions in which HSBC operates which impact on the Malaysian business.
  • Knowledge of the HSBC group corporate structures, its business and personnel and a clear understanding of HSBC’s corporate culture and values.
