  • Wholesale Credit Approval function is one of the activities within Wholesale Credit Risk [WCR] function. WCR is a part of Group WMR which reports directly to the Group CRO and is responsible for the approvals, policies, portfolio management and reporting on the Group’s Wholesale and Market Risk exposures. Group WMR also works with Regional WMR functions across Global Risk to ensure functional consistency and delivery across all group offices.
  • This Role will be positioned within WMR COE in any of the three Cities (Kol/Hyd/BLR). The jobholder is required to undertake judgmental credit decisioning for wholesale credit applications originating from various Group offices from any of the respective Regions (UK).
  • The role is to foster and encourage a sound common credit culture and to avoid undue risk concentrations, with the aim of ensuring a sustainable high quality lending portfolio. In carrying out these duties, the jobholder must be fully aware of the need to meet customer requirements and the overall effect of the marketplace on the credit process.
  • In fulfilling these objectives, there is a need to provide appropriate direction and guidance respective Regional Office (UK).  
  • In summary, the prime objective is to ensure that an appropriate balance is achieved between maximizing income, maintaining a well-balanced book as to risk, ensuring credit standards are observed and at the same time being fully responsive to the needs of customers and the marketplace. 

The Opportunity:

  • Credit underwriting, monitoring and control for Commercial Banking business related to the respective Region.
  • Delivery of quality and timely approvals
  • Maintain appropriate credit standards in the approval and control of lending
  • Participate in the maintenance of a stable lending portfolio within Group and Commercial Banking policy objectives.
  • Manage relationship with various stakeholders
  • Management of the workflows to ensure efficient operation of the unit
  • Ensure business continuity and stability

What you’ll do:

  • To contribute to the credit approval process by providing concise, well-reasoned approvals (and Declines) within appropriate time scales.
  • Be responsible for implementing credit risk policies, procedures and standards set out in the GSM, Credit & Risk BIM and Global Wholesale Risk FIM
  • Be responsible for managing and mitigating operational risks in their day to day operations. In executing these responsibilities, the Group has adopted risk management and internal control structure referred to as the ‘Three Lines of Defence’. The jobholder should ensure they understand their position within the Three Lines of Defence, and act accordingly in line with operational risk policy, escalating in a timely manner where they are unsure of actions required
  • To ensure all Basel 2/3 regulations are enacted as ‘Business as Usual’ by adhering to the banks agreed processes/ procedures and achieving a satisfactory Audit report
  • To contribute to the profitability of the HSBC Group and minimise loan losses by ensuring when reviewing proposals, that they meet the HSBC Group’s risk appetite and that risk is minimised and returns maximized
  • To maintain HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators
  • To implement the Group Compliance Policy by containing compliance risk in conjunction with the relevant Compliance Department, ensuring adequate compliance resources and training, fostering a compliance culture and optimising relationships with the regulators

Requirements

What you will need to succeed in the role:

Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications for the role:

  • Academics – University degree in commerce/ economics/ management/ engineering. Preference will be given to the candidates holding MBA-Finance or equivalent/ CA/ ICWA/ CS/ CAIIB/ CFA etc.
  • Experience – 4-5+ years of relevant experience in handling SME/Corporates in a reputed Bank/ FI.
  • Strong analytical and technical skills, with the ability to understand and consolidate diverse and intricate business information and identify and mitigate risk issues
  • Eye for conducting detailed due diligence given the complexities involved, and at the same time be change-oriented given the evolving market and nature of the transactions
  • Demonstrate commercial credit skills, not only on a transaction basis but also credit process management
  • General knowledge of law, accounting and regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of the HSBC Group, particularly CMB, its operations and products and credit policies and processes
  • A good knowledge of CARM and proven history of effective credit decisions (for internal candidates only)
  • Evidence of cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Strong verbal & written communication skills
  • Excellent time and organizational management and evidence of resilience under pressure

  • Should have the capability & flexibility to switch roles within Wholesale Credit Risk in various functions & geographies at short notice if needed and thus be a fungible resource
