The Opportunity:

Role purpose 

  • The role holder will focus on the provision of organisation design support across the Risk & Compliance function, predominantly focusing on UK business change requirements. Risk & Compliance is experiencing continued evolution as it responds to shifting focuses in the external landscape (e.g. climate risk, geopolitical events), supporting the enterprise growth agenda and itself coming together as a singular function. The Senior Manager Global COO Capability will support Risk and Compliance by offering consultancy services to ensure that the organisational blueprints they work towards are future fit and designed in such a way to provide clarity of purpose, alignment to HSBC’s vision and values and provide meaningful career paths for colleagues in the function and those who may wish to join in the future.
  • On a day-to-day basis the Senior Manager Global COO Capability will be responsible for:

Organisational Design

  • Support stakeholders to uphold Risk and Compliance’s OD principles and the successful and collaborative implementation of them to help R&C develop its operating model to deliver performance and growth across our sub-functions and regions.

Workforce Strategy

  • Support to build the skills-based workforce of the future, ensuring R&C’s sub-functions and regions have the workforce, skills and capabilities to deliver their strategic commitments, as well as shape R&C's future skills and talent acquisition agenda through data based and driven decisioning.

Thought Leadership

  • Be of a growth mindset, staying up to date with external best practice across Organisational Design & Workforce Strategy, and then innovating and embedding this in R&C approaches, metrics and capabilities. The role holder will also build communities of practice, upskilling colleagues in the R&C function in these key competencies to build an enduring capability

What you’ll do:

Organisational Design

  • In-depth understanding of organisational structures, roles, and responsibilities, with the capability to design and optimise them to enhance agility, efficiency, and effectiveness. This includes:
  • Change Management: Leading efforts to implement organisational changes smoothly, including stakeholder engagement with HR, ER, R&C Performance & Delivery teams, Global COO and Global CAO.
  • Structural Analysis: Assessing current organisational structures to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
  • Monitoring Organisational Health Metrics: Monitoring key organisational health metrics such as grade compression and span of control to identify areas for improvement in order to proactively drive initiatives to enhance organisational effectiveness.
  • Design Authority Management: Preparing comprehensive, uniform packs for ECC and NCM meetings, Functions ODA and Group ODA, interlocking with HR / ER ahead of time on proposed changes, and preparing Senior Leaders for Consultation and Design Authority forums.
  • Trusted Advisor: Providing confidential, timely and pragmatic advice and challenge to senior business leaders, converting Organisational Design intentions into action which meet the highest levels of interrogation.

Workforce Strategy

  • Strategic Thinking: Anticipate future workforce trends, aligning workforce planning initiatives with the long-term strategic objectives of a skills-based organisation.
  • Diversity & Inclusion: Ensuring that D&I is a constant principle in strategic workforce planning, including but not exclusively: ensuring appropriate representation on succession plans, identifying and creating data-led interventions for target populations, partnering with HR on co-led initiatives.
  • Talent Management: Implementing comprehensive talent management strategies, including function-wide talent identification, recruitment, retention, and development, to build and maintain a high-performing workforce within R&C (up to but not including Business Critical & Enterprise Critical roles).
  • Succession Planning Strategy: Executing succession planning strategies, including the creation of succession blueprints and talent pipelines, to identify and nurture future leaders and ensure a seamless transition in key roles and responsibilities (up to but not including Business Critical & Enterprise Critical roles).
  • Data Analytics: Using proficiency in data analysis and interpretation, utilising workforce metrics and analytics to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement in workforce planning, talent management strategy and succession planning.

  • Continuous Learning: Commitment to staying updated on industry best practices, emerging trends, and new technologies related to workforce planning, organisational design, talent management, succession planning, and risk and compliance functions.
  • Innovative strategies: Promoting innovation in approaches to improving processes and enhancing performance of COO Capability procedures, embodying a growth mindset
  • Knowledge Sharing: Proactively sharing research findings and best practices, bringing best practice from HSBC and the external market to R&C, and ensuring best practice in R&C is known and adopted by other GB/GF as appropriate
Requirements

What you will need to succeed in the role:

Candidate technical requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and translate business goals into actionable organisational design and / or strategic workforce planning initiatives
  • Stakeholder focused and commercially astute with a strong understanding of Risk and Compliance sub-functions, the parameters and markets in which we operate,
  • Strong understanding in processes underpinning effective talent management and succession planning strategies
  • Seeks to use data to inform discussions, challenge and influence the business to help Risk and Compliance evolve
  • Operates to enable Risk and Compliance to meet its People Control requirements as well material contributions to the Global Chief Risk and Compliance Officer’s scorecard

Candidate cultural requirements:

  • Advanced leadership, management, collaboration and coaching skills with experience of presenting sound and well-reasoned arguments to influence others
  • Proven problem-solving skills with ability to consider alternative and innovative solutions
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with senior leaders, HR, and other key stakeholders to understand business priorities and align OD and workforce strategies accordingly.
  • The role holder will be expected to operate with the utmost discretion given the sensitive nature of some of the OD programmes
