The Opportunity:

  • Wholesale Credit Portfolio Management (“WCPM”) activities support the HSBC Group in ensuring full awareness of the quality of its wholesale credit portfolio, identifying concerns and undertaking mitigating actions. It serves as a control activity for Risk Appetite, which the Risk Management Framework (RMF) describes as an active risk management process. Roles and responsibilities within Wholesale Credit Portfolio Management reflect the RMF.
  • Global Businesses, as Risk and Control Owners, are responsible for implementing WCPM activities to reflect the controls outlined in this policy chapter. Global Business portfolio performance must be maintained within Wholesale Credit Risk appetite thresholds set by the Global Businesses, with oversight from Wholesale Credit Risk Management (WCRM). WCRM may impose additional permanent, or temporary, controls or reporting requirements as required and will coordinate any requirements raised from time to time by Chief Risk Officers or other internal or external stakeholders.
  • This role seeks to support the strategies of the Global Businesses by setting and managing strategy, policy, risk appetite, expectations and standards for WCRM. 

What you’ll do:

Primary area of responsibility:

  • Analysing and monitoring the credit health of the Global Wholesale Credit portfolio with an industry lens, while working within the matrix across multiple stakeholders.

  • Operates in a fast-changing and often volatile operating environment requiring quality decision making with often incomplete information.
  • Manage self in a positive, engaging, thoughtful and constructive manner, from a role which often has a material influence on outcomes.
  • Maintaining well-regarded, thoughtful communications with principal stakeholders.
  • Lead various developments in industry appetite, Wholesale Portfolio MI and risk management in the absence of readily available IT solutions.

Role Context (The environment and operating conditions of the role including the extent of guidance and authority)

  • Effectively monitor and risk manage the portfolio, primarily with an industry lens, and drive the delivery of global sector reviews, spotlight reviews and lending guidelines
  • Co-ordinate and engage the Industry Risk Management network both periodically and ad-hoc to tap into their subject matter expertise
  • Contribute and where necessary, drive the industry appetite framework related initiatives (governance, new metrics, review and challenge of first line and working groups to name a few)
  • Have awareness of the wider WCRM PM initiatives and projects to make the necessary linkages and contributions
  • The jobholder will be required to be in regular contact with Senior Executive Management (including GCCCO and Regional Heads of WCRM) and will ultimately be responsible for his/her actions.
  • Take ownership and effectively drive a range of projects across the Wholesale bank towards implementation, including all necessary collaboration.
  • Leverage the network to bring appropriate depth of experience to problem solve on complex situations.
  • Work effectively with others across the WCRM function to ensure the output is insightful, professional, and fit for purpose.

Requirements

What you will need to succeed in the role:

Knowledge

  • An experienced risk manager with over 10 years of banking experience or equivalent and a thorough understanding of Group and Regional policies, governance procedures and lending guidelines.
  • Proven ability to problem solve, lead and deliver complex initiatives under strict timelines
  • The job holder will have a good knowledge of credit risk, having had experience at either a regional or country level Wholesale Credit Risk team.
  • Proven ability to engage with senior internal stakeholders regularly by understanding and sharing vision, commercial practices, challenges, and potential solutions and by working collaboratively.
  • Conversant with risk appetite, balance sheet and P&L issues.
  • Understand and consolidate diverse and complex business information and identify / mitigate risk issues.
  • Advanced communication skills, both written and spoken English.

Competencies

  • Proven ability to build strong relationships, negotiate and influence especially at higher levels of management but across the matrix
  • Able to deal with and present views to senior management clearly and succinctly.
  • Sound analytical skills and attention to detail,
  • Competency in analysing and interpreting large datasets.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, inquisitive, analytical and self-starter
  • Ability to deliver material of the highest quality to Senior Management against tight deadlines.
  • Ability to interact smoothly with senior management in Risk, Business and external parties [Regulators, Auditors, etc.]
