HSBC Corporate and Institutional Banking is a markets-led, financing-focused business that provides investment and financial solutions. Through our international network, we connect emerging and mature markets, covering key growth areas. We partner with our corporate, government and institutional clients to help them achieve consistent, long-term performance. Our products and services include advisory, financing, prime services, research and analysis, securities services, trading and sales and transaction banking.

We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as an Associate Director, Business Risk.

Principal Responsibilities

The Capital Markets and Advisory (CM&A) business within Corporate and Institutional Banking (CIB) brings together the Corporate Financing pillar, the Strategic Advisory pillar (Mergers & Acquisitions and Equity Capital Markets) and the Financing Solutions pillar (Debt Capital Markets, Leveraged & Acquisition Finance, Strategic Equity Finance, Corporate Risk Solutions, Structured Finance, CMB Structured Banking, Asset Based Lending and Private Credit Origination). CM&A delivers HSBC’s world-class financing and risk management proposition to our clients globally, working closely with the other product, coverage, sector and regional teams within CIB to ensure the delivery of a solutions-based approach to meet our clients’ needs. Managing non-financial risk falls under the “Stay Safe” agenda, which is a key strategic objective of the CM&A business, so this role is critical to CIB delivering on its strategy.

In this role you will

  • Manage the day-to-day operation and oversight of non-financial risk across multiple offerings in CM&A. Demonstrating compliance with all applicable policies, laws and regulations, whilst ensuring compliance with regulatory mandated local variances and managing regulatory change
  • Drive collaboration initiatives with other Businesses in CM&A and beyond such as Credit and Capital Management (CCM) and Markets and Securities Services (MSS), ensuring good conduct outcomes for customers and consistent policy adherence
  • Interpret non-financial risk data and trends to identify thematic risks, associated issues for the business and their mitigation progress. Identify trends to anticipate emerging risks that the business should act on
  • Engage with the first line stakeholders, second line risk stewards as well as third line audit function to align overall non-financial risk status for the business
  • Drive remediation of audit actions, regulatory issues and any other issues whether identified by management, CCO activities or Risk Steward reviews
  • Ensuring ongoing effectiveness of New Product due diligence and post implementation approval processes whilst maintaining an accurate and robust product inventory suitable for HSBC’s customer base thus negating the impact of a conduct risks transpiring through miss selling scenarios
  • Actively challenge poor, inefficient or excessive controls, related tasks and behaviours to support the adoption of globally consistent policies, procedures and practices. Also facilitate the provision of timely and insightful supervisory frameworks and metrics (KRIs/KPIs) based on globally consistent metrics
Requirements

To be successful you will need

  • Experience working within CM&A or other CIB businesses in a First Line of Defence (1LOD) role and/or Commercial Office is essential
  • Exposure to Non-Financial Risk Management, Risk Management Governance, or Risk Stewardship roles would be advantageous
  • Understanding of non-financial risks including ESG, associated framework, governance requirements and awareness of lead regulators (e.g. PRA, HKMA) expectations.
  • A continuous improvement and innovative mindset and a targeted focus on cost of control e.g. system enforced process and control automation to remove reliance on people and manual process as the primary means of remediation
  • Ability to develop trusted adviser status with key Executive stakeholders through SME expertise, industry experience and track record; ability to understand desired Business outcomes across the matrix and ability to translate in to well communicated and clearly articulated strategies.
  • Knowledge of the external environment - regulatory, political, competitors and market
  • Strong presentation skills, ability to develop clear and succinct presentations and reports for senior management and governance forums
