Global Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all global businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.

We are currently seeking an experienced individual to join this team in the role of Legal Counsel in the Commercial Banking Coverage Legal Team.


The role of Legal Counsel in the Commercial Banking Coverage Legal Team requires the roleholder to support the Head of Team and Senior Legal Counsels in providing legal advice, guidance and support to relationship teams in respect of all customer segments of HSBC UK’s Commercial Banking (“CMB”) business, in connection with:

      • banking products, in particular the provision of lending products, credit and transactions and taking security;
      • general day-to-day transactional, and other customer-facing, legal enquiries;
      • initiatives and change programmes, including transformation activities such as creating playbooks for common queries;
      • provision of regulated lending and other-related products; and
      • redress and remediation programmes.

The role-holder will be required to:

  • support the Head of Team and the Senior Legal Counsels with the provision of legal advice and legal risk management controls and initiatives;
  • build relationships with stakeholders across UK CMB in relation to the business areas supported by the job holder; and
  • support the identification, formulation, co-ordination and communication of policies, procedures and controls to ensure that the Group’s exposure to legal risk in the Commercial Banking business is effectively managed.

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

  • qualified Solicitor with good PQE and relevant sector experience gained either within a financial institution or top tier private practice;
  • knowledge of LMA template loan documentation;
  • experience of a broad range of lending and security products, documents and structures, including various types of borrowers;
  • experience of advising on projects;
  • excellent written and spoken communication skills, with experience of adapting your style and approach to the audience and message to be delivered;
  • ability to think laterally and offer solutions to business problems; and
  • ability to prioritise and work directly with the Commercial Banking business.

The base location for this role is 1 Centenary Square, Birmingham B1 1HQ (subject to ‘return to work’ protocols)
