Ready to set risk stewardship for HSBC Bank Malta through major transformation?
The Role
As Chief Risk Officer (CRO) for HSBC Bank Malta p.l.c. you’ll protect and enable the bank through effective, forward-looking risk management. This is a Board-facing role with accountability to local regulators including the MFSA and the ECB. You’ll provide independent oversight and constructive challenge to support risk and reward-based decisions across the country strategy.
The bank is entering a period of significant change and transformation as it transitions to a new majority shareholder (subject to the applicable regulatory and governance approvals). Success means maintaining strong regulatory confidence, strengthening the risk management framework and delivering clear high-quality risk reporting to the Board and its committees. Over time the remit is expected to expand to include Regulatory Reporting as well as capital, liquidity and IRRBB management (subject to the applicable regulatory and governance approvals).
What you'll be doing
- Set and monitor the bank’s risk appetite and ensure the risk appetite framework remains effective
- Establish appropriate Risk Policies, leveraging Group policies where appropriate and redesigning where required for strategic transformation
- Provide direct risk stewardship across Credit, Liquidity, Market, Operational, Reputational, Strategic and Sustainability Risk
- Deliver enterprise-wide oversight and stewardship of all risks relevant to HSBC Bank Malta
- Provide risk-informed insight on strategy, new products and operating model changes using risk and reward-based methodologies
- Maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders including Global Risk, Finance, Internal Audit and the local CEO and COO
- Embed a strong risk culture with clear first line of defence accountabilities across the bank
- Chair the Country Risk Management Meeting and deliver clear timely high-quality risk reporting to the Board and relevant committees including the Board Risk Committee
- Manage external engagement with regulators, auditors, rating agencies and industry bodies
What we're looking for
- Bring significant experience across more than one technical risk discipline
- Demonstrate senior leadership experience in a global financial services organisation and matrix environment
- Show experience working in a regulated environment including engagement with regulators including the MFSA and the ECB
- Evidence a proven track record guiding leaders and teams through complex change and transformation
- Demonstrate Board-facing experience providing independent oversight, constructive challenge and clear risk advice
- Apply strong knowledge of risk management frameworks, governance and risk policy
- Show broad understanding of control frameworks across material risk types and supervisory expectations
- Bring sound commercial judgement, strategic thinking and collaborative influence across senior stakeholders
