Role Purpose:

The CEO AM UK and Head of UK Wholesale is responsible for oversight of the Asset Management business in the UK and has direct responsibility and leadership of UK Wholesale Sales. 

The role holder is responsible for:

a)    implementing the Asset Management Group’s business strategy and operating objectives;

b)    the people agenda and ensuring the right organizational structure and resources are in place;

c)    ensuring that the operations of the company are both effective and efficient (This includes meeting Group’s requirements and adherence to the Group’s regulatory standards, the appropriate deployment of resources, the attainment of agreed operating plan objectives and the day-to-day management of the business);

d)    supporting senior level client-facing activities; and

e)    ensuring the entity operates in line with local regulations.

The role holder reports into Asset Management’s CEO Europe and Americas on a functional basis. 

Principal Accountabilities:

Impact on the Business

  • UK CEO: SMF1 FCA responsibility. AMEU CEO and board member. Responsible for the leadership of the AMEU on an entity basis. Accountability for suitability of products and initiatives for the UK market, controls, risk management and governance
  • Has accountability for the specific responsibilities allocated under the Senior Manager & Certification Regime (SMCR) as the (role holder) (SMF1) for AMEU entity as detailed in their Statement(s) of Responsibilities.
  • Drive the AM global strategy in the UK and its execution in order to meet/exceed agreed objectives.
  • Accountability for country P&L management working with the Global Heads (Institutional, Wholesale, Operations and Investments). \
  • Lead and manage AM business development/ sales efforts in the UK.
  • Develop relationships with key HSBC Group stakeholders, including Corporate and Institutional Banking (CIB), to grow the business.
  • Represent the AM business at conferences and through trade bodies in furtherance of developing new business relationships and opportunities.  
  • From an entity perspective, ensure all functions such as Sales, Investments, Operations, Risk Management, HR, IT, Compliance, Finance etc. are in line with regulatory requirements.
  • The jobholder must represent and be an ambassador for HSBC Global Asset Management business at all times.
  • Manage the UK Wholesale Sales team, coaching and nurturing talent to successfully expand the business activity in the UK.

Customers / Stakeholders

  • Hold strategic level discussions with Clients to understand their needs and identify value add investment solutions  
  • Responsible for the client satisfaction of all Clients in the UK
  • Develop strong relationships with members of leadership team in the UK and globally, including other CEOs, Sales, Investments, Operations, Marketing etc.
  • Manage the HSBC Group stakeholders’ relationships i.e. CIB and IWPB
  • Represent HSBC Asset Management at external events that support business positioning and growth.
  • Represent HSBC Asset Management in dealing with regulatory authorities; Build and maintain effective relationships with regulatory authorities, keep abreast of market developments and understand its implications on the business.

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Lead the business in the UK, ensuring the team is adequately staffed in line with opportunities.
  • Lead, develop and motivate the leadership team to attract, retain and develop the capacity, capability and talent of staff to ensure delivery of business objectives and succession planning.
  • Drive and encourage constructive teamwork within a highly matrixed structure, providing management, leadership, guidance and support to members of the team.
  • Establish annual goals and objectives for the team and agree in measurable performance criteria.
  • Responsible for managing all issues related to staffing, performance management, compensation, and career development
  • DE&I MANCo sponsorship role: Sponsors the AM DE&I programme ensuring a balanced and comprehensive approach to D, E & I development. Also, acts as Co-Chair for the DE&I programme.

Operational Effectiveness & Control

  • Ensure compliance with AM’s policies and control procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and requirements.
  • Ensure all support functions (Operations, Risk Management, HR, IT, Compliance, Finance etc.) are in place to support business strategy and objectives as well as regulatory requirements.
  • Lead the continuing development, implementation and improvement of the processes, structures, capabilities, capacity and infrastructure needed to deliver agreed plans and targets, collaborating with colleagues to maximise end-to-end integration, effectiveness and efficiency
  • Ensure that all sales and client management processes are of the highest quality and in line with AM’s risk framework 

Major Challenges:

  • Transformation of the business to meet evolving client needs in the context of an industry not used to change
  • Delivery of business growth objectives focusing on revenues and profitability rather than AuM, in a challenging industry environment of reduced margins, consolidation and heightened fund performance expectations
  • Managing the prioritisation of competing demands from different stakeholders (Group, investments, capability businesses, operations, marketing, regulatory change etc.) with limited resources whilst delivering in line with AMG strategy
  • Breadth of oversight given AM’s global footprint and the importance of prioritization

Role Context:

  • New role to lead and oversee the AM business in the UK as well as direct responsibility for the UK Wholesale Sales team.

  • Expected to deliver high quality business development and client management services to HSBC standards; Expected to provide clear commercial judgment and direction; Expected to interact with and influence a diverse group of senior stakeholders who are geographically spread and may have different requirements (local, regional and global) and competing demands; Expected to flexibly adapt to a changing set of demands, triggered by, for example: changes in Regulation, management and client requests
Requirements

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree, preferably in Finance, Business Management (MBA) or equivalent is preferred

Knowledge & Experience

  • At least 15 to 18 years of proven experience in Asset Management, financial services or capital markets with at least 8 to 10 years in a leadership role.
  • Significant executive management experience across strategic planning, team-building, business development, financial and risk management.
  • Deep knowledge of the asset management investment capabilities and products.
  • Appreciation of Asset Management industry sales processes / business methodologies.
  • Knowledge of industry trends and understanding of the UK regulatory environment. 
  • Competitor knowledge, including strengths and weaknesses and product range
  • Have the ability and willingness to innovate and think outside the box.

    • devise strategic plans to lead the team to achieve business objectives in a very competitive and highly regulated environment; and
    • build and maintain effective relationships with key internal / external stakeholders as well as regulatory authorities.  
  • Strategic thinking abilities – a strategist who will help shape the future of AM businesses.  He/she is expected to lead and operate successfully in a highly dynamic, fast-moving and competitive market environment, actively looking for and responding to potential opportunities (e.g., acquisition, JV) that may arise.
  • Communication, influencing and collaborative skills – able to achieve results within HSBC's matrix environment, with strong communication skills and the ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders across the organization to execute against AM’s strategy
