The Head of Business Risk has direct accountability for the following:

  • Effectively managing the adherence to the Enterprise Risk Management Framework across the UK, leading risk and control remediations (as required) as well as leading and influencing conversations with Senior Management and Regulators. 
  • Acts as the First Line of Defence and ensures the bank operates within its risk appetite by providing specialist risk and control knowledge and insights, promoting the right risk and control culture and decision-making across the entity.
  • Working in partnership with other members of the UK Chief Operating Office leadership team to optimize and simplify our operating model and delivery execution in line with our cultural and strategic ambitions
  • Lead, shape, and execute all Business Management activities on behalf of the Chief Operating Officer e.g. governance papers, scorecard reporting, engagement activity, communications strategy, executive papers, and SMCR reporting on behalf of SMF24.
  • Be the first point of contact for Regulatory Interaction and reporting on behalf of HSBC UK this includes managing new programmes into BAU e.g. Material Controls. 
  • Lead interactions with the Payments Industry managing key stakeholders such as Bank of England and Pay UK, with the application, operation and reporting of all Payments regulations. Providing input, challenge, and feedback on consultation papers.
  • The role is particularly critical in the context of increased internal, as well as external (e.g., local regulator) attention to identify, measure, evaluate, control, and manage risk effectively. 
  • Identify trends to anticipate future developments in the risk and control environment, positively challenges less than effective controls, tasks, and behaviors. Working as part of the HSBC UK and Group Business Risk leadership teams to bring new and market leading thinking to the ongoing development of the Business Risk Function.
  • Accountable for bringing together a community of 1LOD risk professionals to ensure a collaborative and cohesive approach to ensure HSBC UK remains within risk appetite and is proactively managing risk for the benefit of our customers. 
     

     

    Principle Accountabilities
     

  • Active and engaged member of the HSBC UK Chief Operating Officer senior leadership team.
  • Set and drive governance and reporting capability on behalf of the Chief Operating Officer for both internal and external stakeholders including HSBC UK Board 
  • Represent HSBC with regulators, government, clients and other third parties and protect the HSBC brand by challenging behavior that may expose the brand to regulatory, consumer or media criticism.
  • Support the HSBC UK COO to effectively manage the risk and control environment, a key priority in driving the Banks’ strategy, coordination, and agreement of strategic plans across the UK.
  • Develop strong advisory controls relationship with the Chief Operating Officer, the HSBC UK Operating Committee, as well as leaders across Business and Infrastructure teams. 
  • Responsible for oversight of a team of payments specialists that that engage with the UK Payments Industry, schemes and market infrastructure and provide both strategic direction as well as day to day management of our UK/EU payments (high value and retail).

Requirements

Essential Experience:

Comprehensive knowledge of:

  • Internal risk environment.
  • External environment (risk, regulatory, political, competitors etc.).
  • End-to-end risk processes and systems within the organisation. 
  • Interaction with External Regulatory and government bodies
  • Business Management, Chief Operating Office or similar.
     

    Technical Competence

     

     

  • Risk & Control subject matter expertise.  
  • Ability to distil complex and varied information into useful, insightful and concise recommendations.  
  • Ability to identify, assess and communicate the need for risk management intervention in complex, fast paced environments.
