Finance - Tax 

Hang Seng's Financial Control function works closely with the Bank's stakeholders, including business partners, shareholders, regulators, and external examiners. We function as their accountants and business partners in providing comprehensive information on financial management, financial planning, financial reporting and compliance, capital planning and reporting, financial control & SOX control, tax advisory, insurance finance, and treasury and investment finance.

We are currently seeking a high caliber professional to join our team as Head of Tax, reporting to CFO.

This role will have overall responsibility for tax matters relating to Hang Seng Bank covering all first line tax risks and second line obligations.  The role will report to the Hang Seng CFO but will also require significant engagement/escalation reporting to the Head of Tax, Asia and MENAT and the Head of Regional Reporting and Head of HK Tax within the broader Hong Kong tax team.  

  • The key areas of responsibility including corporate tax reporting, tax compliance and business governance and support activities, including being a subject matter expert on HK tax matters.    
  • Key contact point for Hang Seng CFO in respect of Hang Seng tax matters with overall responsibility including in relation to business governance and support
  • Key activities include review and challenge of tax numbers booked by Hang Seng, including close liaison with business governance and control teams as regards Hang Seng business activities.  
  • Responsibility for review and challenge in relation to Uncertain Tax Positions reporting, and ensuring Hang Seng entities provide verbal and written updates (in the reporting portal where appropriate).  
  • Responsible for briefing Regional tax reporting team, before and after quarter-end reporting activities to enable them to discharge their own responsibilities, including in relation to reporting to external auditors.
  • Key contact point for Controllership colleagues in responsible for Hang Seng matters across Financial Control and colleagues in FinOps to support their reporting of material tax issues arising as part of financial reporting processes
  • Corporate and operational tax reporting to Hang Seng finance colleagues for external tax disclosures in audited financial statements.
  • Working closely within the broader Controllership function, including local and Regional Tax to enhance the control environment of Tax reporting process together with proactively managing, anticipating and escalating risks and issues.
  • Other tasks within the Asia and Middle East tax team as required (e.g. projects etc) 
Requirements
  • Qualified professional with significant tax experience
  • Substantial knowledge of IFRS tax accounting standards, including in relation to IFRIC 23 (Uncertain Tax Positions)
  • Significant prior work experience on corporate tax and / or international tax matters (in order to be able to exercise review and challenge in relation to tax work undertaken by colleagues in relation to Hang Seng HK entities)
  • Should be familiar with banking financial operating systems / models, particularly in relation to those used by Tax team members supporting Hang Seng entities
  • Qualified professional with significant tax experience
  • Substantial knowledge of IFRS tax accounting standards, including in relation to IFRIC 23 (Uncertain Tax Positions)
  • Significant prior work experience on corporate tax and / or international tax matters (in order to be able to exercise review and challenge in relation to tax work undertaken by colleagues in relation to Hang Seng HK entities)
  • Should be familiar with banking financial operating systems / models, particularly in relation to those used by Tax team members supporting Hang Seng entities
