Legal Department

Our legal function comprises legal counsels and executives of high caliber with their respective expertise. We work as a team, with the mission to provide legal services of the highest professional standards to:

•       facilitate the business by giving proactive, practical and comprehensive legal advice

•       manage legal risk

•       protect the integrity and reputation of the bank

We function as trusted legal advisers and proactive business partners to our management and the business and other support functions that we serve. If you join the Legal function, you will be part of a global team, providing you with know-how and support, and you will gain exposure to a variety of financial services and products.

We are currently seeking a high caliber professional to join our team as Legal Counsel

Principal responsibilities

• Provide legal advice, guidance and support across Retail Banking and Wealth (RB&W) business (including account opening, lending, wealth distribution, product development, and business projects)

• Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements, customer documentation and marketing materials.

• Advise on legal issues concerning new products and services, marketing initiatives and customer complaints to ensure legal and reputational risks are proactively identified and mitigated.

• Keep up-to-date on relevant legal, regulatory and market developments and assess their impact on the Bank’s business.

• Brief Legal management on major issues arising in relevant business areas and major legislative changes in area of expertise

• Understand and apply the risk management framework to ensure quality, effective risk management and regulatory compliance

• Coordinating and managing relationships between internal and external stakeholders, businesses and support functions such as external advisors, compliance and risk functions, operations and project managers.

• Be proactive, innovative and suggest solutions that are pragmatic and commercially sound, in addition to being legally sound, aligned with the Bank’s strategy and within the Bank’s risk parameters.

• Provide legal services in a cost-effective manner and properly manage legal expenses (internal and external) within the approved budget

• Qualified lawyer

• Good knowledge and with experience as in-house legal in the banking industry especially in the retail banking sector

• Experience in data and privacy matters is a bonus.

• Strong contract drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills.

• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills

• Good knowledge of the HASE and HSBC Group corporate structures, its business and personnel and a clear understanding of HASE and HSBC’s corporate culture is a plus

• Lateral thinking/problem solving/creativity

• Professional qualifications such as Enhanced Competency Framework (ECF) and/or Certified Banker (CB) under Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (HKIB) would be an advantage.
