Post-crisis, and in particular with the implementation of Basel III, capital has become a scarce resource and the capital management processes have needed to evolve to reflect this. Capital Management involving Capital Planning, Return on Tangible Equity (RoTE) and Economic Profit (EP) reporting, Capital Optmisation and performance are now an integral part of Finance Processes, including Financial Resource Planning and Stress Testing. Effective Capital management, planning and forecasting requires successful co-ordination of activities across a wide range of stakeholders against frequently tight timetables, the ability to work collaboratively with other teams within Finance and outside finance, while providing an effective review and challenge, the ability to place the capital plans within a commercial context and identify opportunities for improvement, and clear communication of the outcomes.

The Opportunity:

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to be part of Group RoTE/EP Reporting within Group Capital Management under the Group Treasury. This role will support extensively to Group’s Capital Management requirements and provide support in delivering the RoTE/EP outcomes to the Group, Global Businesses and Regions, for internal and external reporting. The role holder will also have the opportunity to add value, support in the creating efficiency, thus providing the business with opportunities for investment or increased shareholder returns.

What you’ll do:

The role holder be a part of Group Treasury within the Capital Management team and will focus on the Return on Group Tangible Equity (RoTE) and Economic Profit (EP) metric. The role holder will work across a number of disciplines within RoTE/EP reporting , and report to the AVP, Group RoTE/EP Reporting. On a day-to-day basis, for functional matters, will have a reporting line to the Group RoTE/EP Global Treasury team in London. The role holder will support the Group RoTE/EP Reporting in the following capacities:

  • Take ownership and provide support of the regular delivery of RoTE and EP reporting by Global Businesses, and associated plan and forecast financials.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders including Capital Management teams across the globe; senior FP&A/Strategy stakeholders in each of the Global Businesses.
  • Enhance RoTE and EP planning processes by identifying areas for process improvements / re-engineering, driving meaningful change in the quality and timeless of results delivery.
  • Deliver Managed and Marginal EP and embed analysis into strategic conversations.
  • Produce regular MI for the Markets Treasury teams drilling down to the key drivers of returns.
  • Push forward our collective understanding of the key drivers of RoTE and EP performance. Providing high quality financial commentary into GB Finance, Group Reporting and Strategy teams.
  • Ensuring that the outputs are of a high quality, reflecting accepted regulatory policy and standards.
  • Work within the Capital Management team to identify efficiency initiatives, investigate feasibility and support in implementation.
  • Other initiatives within the Capital Management team, as required.  These may focus on capital efficiency, capital performance, ad-hoc analysis or be broader in nature.
Requirements

What you will need to succeed in the role:

  • We are looking for an individual who has knowledge of accounting/financial reporting, capital requirements or has experience in analytics within financial services. More specifically,
  • Experience with handling and interpreting large and complex data sets. Comfortable to huge data points spreadsheet and able to ‘tell the story’ is a must.
  • Experience of working with TM1 is preferred.
  • Experience of using emerging technology (e.g. Qlik) a plus.
  • Finance/ treasury/ risk background, with knowledge of accounting, capital requirements and market risk.
  • Experience working in relevant environment/s, i.e. banking and relevant market/context, i.e. Capital management, Capital reporting, regulatory experience, PRA experience.                   
  • Both spoken and written communication skills with experience of adapting your style and approach to the audience and message to be delivered. 
  • Able to deliver to tight deadlines, react quickly when required.
  • A broad understanding of financial budgets/statements/models, with experience of analyzing data effectively for planning, forecasting and reporting.
  • Qualifications : Qualified ACA /CA/ Management Accountant / MBA / CFA with experience in Finance, Treasury, Corporate Finance and Banking. Significant operational experience (e.g., 4+ years) within Treasury/Capital Planning or Financial Reporting will be advantageous.

Experience:

  • Finance/ treasury/ risk background, with knowledge of accounting/financial reporting or capital requirements.
  • Highly numerate with strong background in mathematic disciplines.
  • Understanding of banking products and how they relate to capital requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.  Experience of presenting to senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to work with, co-ordinate and influence a wide range of stakeholders.  Experience of working with regulators an advantage.
  • Good understanding of, and ability to pro-actively manage, risks.
  • Able to deliver to tight deadlines, react quickly when required.
  • Appetite to seek opportunities and work beyond the immediate boundaries of the role.

What additional skills will be good to have?

Knowledge of software development and ideally some experience in coding.
