We are currently seeking an experienced individual to join this team in the role of Senior Manager, Credit Risk.
The job holder covers Corporate Credit approvals for the Region/AMH.
Key responsibilities:
- In charge of a defined portfolio in relation to Wholesale Credit Risk related matters with a focus on CRE.
- Review, recommend, and approve Corporate credit proposals in accordance with authorised credit limits.
- Maintain sound credit quality in line with the Group's / HBAP’s core credit culture - conservative, constructive and competitive. Promote prudent lending principles to ensure strong asset quality and to minimise credit losses.
- Primary point of contact for the portfolio under responsibility for all Wholesale Credit Risk related and Commercial Real Estate sector specific matters; which include approvals, pipeline discussions, portfolio/sector reviews, management of problem exposures, processes, policies and guidelines.
- Involvement in Commercial Real Estate sector focused projects, as well as other region-wide and local Wholesale Credit Risk related projects or forums as delegated by Head of WCR from time to time.
- Proactively identify and highlight emerging risk issues and sub-standard credit exposures and ensure appropriate action is taken to protect the Bank’s interests
- Engage stakeholders and internal customers regularly by understanding and sharing vision, best practice, challenges, and potential solutions; and by working collaboratively on transaction pipelines, credit guidelines, portfolio or product reviews, appetite definition and other credit risk related initiatives.
- Maintain regular communication with Business, Product, Sector teams, Group and other in-country Risk teams, provide feedback or advice to maintain effective relationships in the areas of responsibility; reinforce HSBC’s strong brand value with third parties.
- Provide best practice feedback, and review portfolio management & functional aspirational targets to highlight any credit / environmental / reputational issues arising.
- Provide wider contribution to other areas of the Wholesale Credit Risk team and guiding/mentoring of junior colleagues.
Principal Accountabilities:
Pro-active risk management
- Take action to pro-actively identify, escalate and remediate emerging risks in the portfolio under responsibility and actively involve risk owners (Business stakeholders). These risks can be either borrower-specific or broader across a segment, industry sector, geography, product, etc.
- Gain strong understanding of potential triggers such as change in economic conditions, sector disruption, new technologies, market events, change in regulations or other events. This objective refers mostly to credit risks but is also applicable to other risk categories such as for example sustainability risk, reputational risk or operational risk.
Customer experience
- Strive to minimise backlogs in credit approvals and to deliver credit decisions within commercially competitive timeframes.
- Help Businesses improve the quality of their submissions (both form and substance) so that credit decisions can be taken more effectively and with less re-writing, Q&A or resubmission.
- Communicate on potential issues and showstoppers at an early stage in order to manage expectations and guide decisions towards balanced outcomes. Actively participate in pipeline meetings for portfolio under responsibility.
- Gain a good understanding of the strategic Business priorities in the areas under responsibility, participate in the definition of appetite (CRP, strategy paper) and develop initiatives to support and enable.
Team play
- Actively contribute to the team beyond the scope of the desk/area under responsibility.
- Champion at least one product area, risk area, control area, regulatory area or staff development area on behalf of the team, acting as the key WCR representative for this area (participate in related initiatives/meetings, provide regular updates to the team, escalate to HoWCR when required).
- Volunteer for ad hoc projects and missions for the team. Get involved in the development of junior staff (mentoring, support to STAs, training, role-modelling, etc.).
- Promote WCR with external stakeholders through exchange meetings with RMs, participation in trainings as SME, site visits, etc. Systematically reach out to provide help to other team members on credit approvals when workload permits.
Efficiency and innovation
- Champion or contribute ideas and best practices for the improvement of operational efficiency of ASP WCR. Support Business in efficiency projects which involve WCR. Work (with Country Risk teams for desk managers) on efficiency initiatives including: CARM approval and turnaround statistics, application of delegated authorities, CARM submission quality.
- Work with the frontline on efficiency improvement initiatives when warranted. Take an active part in WCR’s innovation agenda through submission of ideas, involvement in working groups / experiments, participation in trainings on innovation and new technologies.
Knowledge & Experience
- Typically qualifications would include an undergraduate or post-graduate degree in Business Administration, Finance or a related field
- Exposure to demanding operational environments to gain insight into effective risk management applications
- Working across all levels of the organization to understand cross-functional linkages and interdependencies, as well as the implications of credit and other risks at both a strategic level and at the Global Business level
- Good understanding of HSBC overall business dynamics
- Experience of creating and leading a team and driving forward under a strategic framework with demonstrated results
- Has developed a high level of professional competence which helps to determine risk based solutions
Skills
- Extensive Credit risk experience in the relevant lines of Businesses (CMB and GB) with exposure to the Commercial Real Estate sector, preferably in Hong Kong and China
- Understand the global and regional strategies of the Group and collaborates with Businesses to execute the strategies
- Ability to form effective relationships and achieve influence at the senior level in the organization
- Communication and interpersonal skills, including the capacity to articulate the case for risk management in the language of business
- Understand and interpret complex business requirements
- Proven ability to prioritize competing demands
- Demonstrated ability to assess risk trends, both internally and externally
- High levels maturity, resilience, sharp negotiation and communication skills
- Good command of spoken and written English, Cantonese/ Mandarin would be advantageous
