Working with Business areas, the team is responsible for providing specialist risk support on key verticals in

  • Financial Crime,

  • Regulatory, Governance and Framework including risk identification and assessment of Business Risks as part of the activities and process within the lines of business.

The Opportunity:

  • The responsibility for Fraud Risk Management is within the functional remit of the First Line of Defense and has been established as an enduring Global function. The purpose is to facilitate and manage activities to continue to drive and implement a consistent and effective fraud risk management framework throughout CIB business. The role holder will support global and geographical fraud teams, the front line and will be responsible for implementing and overseeing fraud risk management strategies and deliverables for Corporate & Institutional Banking Business and Commercial Banking business in home markets.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead / implement strategic initiatives, deliver and manage support on Fraud Risk related matters such as risk identification, mitigation, governance, insights and control activities for the respective line of business alongside engagement with other colleagues, counterparts and stakeholders in wider 1LOD, 2LOD, DBS, CIB, CMB, and other business/functional lines if necessary.
  • Perform high quality lending fraud risk analysis through review of financial statements / annual accounts for selected New to Bank (NTB) and Existing to Bank (CIB and CMB) customers in line with the global procedures.
  • Undertake thematic reviews aimed at managing and mitigating risk proactively.
  • Support enhancement of the fraud risk capability around detection and deterrence of First Party Lending Fraud (1PLF) Risk predominantly identified through Financial Statement Misrepresentation. 
  • Challenge cognitive bias both from 1PLF risk SMEs as well as front line business.
  • Create awareness of 1PLF risk and train front line business with respect to 1PLF risk. 
  • Extend SME support to business and stakeholders around First party Lending Fraud Risk
  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of lending fraud and upskill through continuous learning.
  • Provide strategic insights through use of MI, trend analysis and emerging Risks. Drive a more proactive risk management framework through enhanced assessment, reporting and analytics. 
  • Facilitate the earlier identification of fraud risk in the credit lifecycle. Promote a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging colleagues to identify and implement best practices in risk management.
  • Monitor and support the resolution of data quality issues emerging through documented artefacts
  • Help ensure the team operates in an efficient and effective manner, delivering high-quality risk management support to the organization.

Leadership & Teamwork  

  • Lead and manage a team to support COO and fraud risk with best-in-class risk management practices.
  • Contribute towards a strong risk management culture across COO  
  • Support achievement of the HSBC strategy, purpose and values in personal behaviour, actions and decision making.
Requirements

What you will need to succeed in the role:

  • Proven, progressive and broad-based banking experience in commercial banking lending, relationship management and/or lending fraud management or financial statement fraud investigations or equivalent. 
  • Strong experience analyzing financial statement of wholesale / corporate clientele.
  • Strong experience around wholesale credit risk with strong analytical skills and a keen eye for detail.
  • Experience around complex fraud / forensic investigation of corporate clientele would be an added advantage.
  • In depth knowledge of Lending Fraud typologies and industry fraud risk trends.
  • Ability to work independently and apply judgement/critical thinking to identify risks and trends. 
  • Strong understanding of the HSBC global organization. 
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills; an ability to communicate with impact, ensuring complex information is articulated in a meaningful way. 
  • A legal or formal accountancy qualification or professional/working background in relevant risk disciplines. 
  • Proactive and willing to challenge the status quo. 
  • Written and spoken fluency in English is a requirement.

What additional skills will be good to have?

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience around CIB Credit risk and / or Complex Investigation of CIB business
  • Demonstrable problem-solving experience and supporting decision making process through active participation within Working Groups
  • Sound knowledge of the Risk Management Framework (expert not required), preferably through previous role.
