Role purpose

The COO reports into the Group CIO who is responsible for circa 60,000 staff and an annual operating budget of approximately $7 billion.  

GCIO utilises the services of more than 2,000 vendors and spends in excess of $5bn per annum.

The Group Chief Information Office (GCIO) Chief Operating Office (COO) team has aligned teams for each of the Global Business’ and Global Functions. This role is part of the COO Vendor Management team and will be responsible for Vendor Management activities in close collaboration with the GCIO GBGF teams and Vendor Management representatives.

The role holder will be responsible for the establishment and effective running of the central Vendor Management Practice/Office, working in tandem with the GCIO business (GBGI) aligned Vendor Management teams to establish strategy & best practice.


Vendor Management Practice/VMO (specifically)

  • Build and maintain a strategic and progressive relationship with Procurement – focusing on process and tooling improvements to the benefit of GCIO as a recipient of procurement services
  • Produce and maintain the framework of processes/documentation and artefacts to logically and simply provide organisation, guidance and engagement for the central vendor management team and the wider GCIO Vendor Management community (known as the Vendor Management Pillar)
  • Organise and run the Vendor Management Community communications and events – townhalls, comms, adoption strategies, reporting etc
  • Agree with CIO’s the allocation Vendor Sponsors (Captains) and work with those Captains to drive value and the relationship with the designated Vendors.  Agree long term sourcing plans aligned to strategy.
  • Ensure the broader internal engagement, understanding and appreciation of the Vendor Management practice is created and maintained
  • Maintain an ‘outside/in’ perspective via research, peer networks to help ensure the continuous improvement ethos of the Vendor Management practice is maintained
  • Be the representative/owner of Simplification improvement initiatives for Vendor Management.
  • Create engaging and dynamic scorecards and comms material.

Leadership & Teamwork 

  • Chair Vendor Management Meetings
  • Chair Vendor Governance meetings as appropriate
  • Design, gain buy-in and run internal governance meetings and forums as required
  • Run/Oversee Vendor related projects/initiatives
  • Relationship and Stakeholder Management
  • Embed ‘How we lead’ behaviors and models within the GCIO Vendor Management community

Functional Knowledge

  • Proven track record in technology vendor management role within the financial services industry, preferably within multinational banks
  • Strong understanding of Technology operational management requirements for banks and knowledge of the external environment - regulatory, political, competitor and market
  • Ability to translate technology strategy and align with vendors accordingly
  • SME across Third party risk management lifecycle and Third party regulatory landscape
  • Experience of operating within a complex matrix environment
  • Deep financial and commercial awareness
  • Demonstrable experience in driving vendor performance, delivering service improvement plans and managing vendors across all contract types (T&M, Manage Services, hardware and software)
  • Ability to manage and mitigate operational risk effectively
  • Contract knowledge and able to design contracts to meet the requirements of the business
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and make data-driven decisions to drive business outcomes
  • Understanding of the HSBC Group and its strategy, structures and processes
  • Knowledge of the external environment - regulatory, political, competitor and market
  • Outstanding Technology leader who is passionate about driving the business agenda
  • 20+ years of hands-on experience in leading and influencing global technology teams of 100+FTEs in a matrix financial organization with a similar scale
  • Deep subject matter expertise to lead diverse teams across global functions, with strong people leadership, teamwork, gathering information and analyzing, judgment and decision making, communication competencies
  • Understanding of and experience with emerging data technologies
  • Solid data technology delivery record in global capacity, as well as full literacy to articulate key technology trends (e.g. Data & AI) and regulatory expectations (e.g. Data Privacy & Localization, PRA, ECB etc) in context of HSBC
  • Strong understanding of operational effectiveness and strong number drive
  • Leading and directing executive and non-executive work groups and effecting change through people
  • Keen understanding of products, services and underlying processes to fulfill Strong Commercial Orientation, ability in balancing risks vs. rewards and maximizing the cost effectiveness and profitability for the business
  • Respectful of different cultures, working with colleagues from across regions
  • Understanding of cloud computing concepts and their impact on service and change delivery
  • Experience with service level management, incident management and change management
  • Experience with IT automation tools and DevSecOps practices and technologies
  • ideally familiar with Hadoop and GCP (BigQuery) or either of Apache / Spark / Flink, Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, HDInsight, Trino / Presto / Starburst.

What we offer

The pay range for this role is 32,792.00 - 49,183.33 PLN.

Additional car allowance in the amount of 7,397.00 PLN (monthly, gross).

Variable pay is discretionary, but influenced by Group performance, business/function performance and individual performance.
