The Legal team plays an important role in providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management both in Australia and regionally. The team also advises on, and is actively involved in, all business and operational strategies and initiatives, from legislative and regulatory matters to the setting of policies, standards and procedures for guarding against and reporting on legal risk and reputational management issues.
We are recruiting for a unique opportunity as Legal Counsel – Regulatory. In this role, you will provide practical, impactful legal advice on a wide range of legal matters relating to all our lines of business and functions. You will also be involved in legal risk management, while also supporting other bank wide initiatives, projects and programs.
This is an opportunity to develop a wide-ranging practice across the entire bank in Australia, with an additional focus on the more heavily regulated areas such our retail bank. This role is perfect for someone who is able to prioritise a varied workload across a diverse mix of matters in the regulatory space, interested in the opportunity to get involved in responding to government and regulators, employment law, some litigation and also provide detailed strategic advice on major projects and regulatory developments. Trust us no two days will be the same! You will work in a collaborative high-performing in-house legal team, having direct contact with our internal stakeholders and autonomous carriage of your matters.

Responsibilities:
- Providing legal advice, guidance and support relating to a wide range of regulatory matters including:-
- Compliance with financial services and credit laws as well as regulatory developments in these areas.
- Legal advice on potential regulatory breaches across a range of business areas.
- Assisting with specialised procurement matters.
- Advising on complex data privacy and Spam Act issues.
- Advising on financial crime issues including sanctions, anti-money laundering and compliance with fraud requirements.
- Responding to regulatory investigations and litigation where appropriate, instructing lawyers. - Developing knowledge in and advising on human resources issues as they arise.
- Involvement with the reporting of legal risk internally at HSBC, as well as championing legal risk management in the Legal Team.
- Building strong stakeholder relationships achieved through acting as a trusted adviser, ensuring that commercially sensitive, pragmatic and practical legal support and advice is provided in a cost-effective manner.
- Ensuring that matters arising from legal issues are promptly identified to Legal management and assisting in the management of such issues.
- Living HSBC’s organisational values through aligned behaviour and performance outcomes.
- Contribution to the ongoing success of the legal team through sharing knowledge and ideas for continuous improvement.
Requirements:
- Solid experience as an In-house Legal Counsel or mid-level private practice lawyer, admitted to practice law in Australia.
- Knowledge and experience of the law in relation to a wide range of laws and regulations in the Australian banking and financial services industry.
- Experience in the drafting and negotiation of a broad range of third-party supplier contracts.
- Exposure to regulatory matters and investigations advice or investigation.
- Ability to build strong stakeholder relationships through quality collaboration with various teams across the business as a trusted advisor.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, coupled with strong negotiation and influencing skills.
- Adaptability and flexibility to adjust to shifting priorities in a varied workload, coupled with a desire to learn and get involved.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced commercial culture, autonomously managing a wide range of matters under deadline pressure.
- A genuine client service focus with the ability to see things from a customer’s perspective.
- Demonstrated commitment to living HSBC’s values and contribute knowledge and ideas to continuous improvement.
Preference will be given to candidates who hold Australian PR/Citizenship or New Zealand Citizenship, or who can demonstrate current unrestricted work rights in Australia without limitations.
