We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Head of Connect Engineering

Principal responsibilities 
The Head of Connect Engineering is accountable to the Global Head of Connect for end-to-end execution and delivery of the HSBC Connect service to our clients, including change programmes, technology programmes and production services. 

The channel is primarily targeted at HSBC's high-volume clients spanning across GBM and CMB market segments, allowing customers to transfer large quantities of payments.  Connect is present in 51 markets and 7 virtual presence markets globally, with 24k customers. It processes over 10 million files annually across an extensive suite of formats and instruction types. We facilitate c2 billion instructions with an approximate USD value of $ $7.3 trillion.

The role will support our multi-year architecture, technology, people, and process changes while ensuring delivery to our business partners’ requirements. Pivotal to this will be modernising our technology, redefining our ways of working; diminishing engineering friction and creating enabled and autonomous teams that can deliver functions front-to-back. 

The role will require a focused drive to uplift the Resilience of our service through the Technology Resilience Maturity Framework (TRMF) and ensure best practices are deployed and adopted as BAU within all engineering functions across the group.

While there is a strong matrix management focus of a large contingent of technologists (developers, testers, release managers, delivery SMEs, etc.), there is also a need for equally strong stakeholder engagement. The Head of Connect Engineering will work in partnership with their business counterparts, and colleagues across the broader HSBC Technology function to ensure we meet the needs of our clients. 

The Head of Connect Engineering is responsible for working across the Technology Delivery Lifecycle including inception, construction, testing, release and on-going management of a product or service. They will be required to continually enhance their skills within a number of specialisms which include front end, development, security, testing and operational support.

This role will carry out some or all of the following activities:
• Drive activities to support Engineering Transformation under our Future Fit programme to include:
o E2E automation Workflow (CI/CD) 
o Fully Automated Functional Integration test
o Observability and Alerting
o Reusability of Assets within Wholesale Digital (including our API estate)
• Provide technical leadership across the end-to-end delivery and run lifecycle, utilising their skills and expertise to carry out software development, testing and operational support activities typically being deployed to resolve the most challenging and/or impactful projects or deliveries 
• End to end accountability for a product or service, identifying and developing the most appropriate Technology solutions to meet customer needs as part of the Customer Journey 
• Liaise with other engineers, architects, and business stakeholders to understand and drive the product or service’s direction. 
• Establish a digital environment and automate processes to minimize variation and ensure predictable high quality code and data. 
• Create technical test strategies, plans and records, including unit and integration tests, within automated test environments to ensure code quality. 
• Provide support to DevOps teams working at all stages of a product or service release/change with a strong customer focus and end to end journeys, ensuring they have an excellent domain knowledge. 
• Working with Ops, Dev and Test Engineers to ensure operational issues (performance, operator intervention, alerting, design defect related issues, etc.) are identified and addressed at all stages of a product or service release / change. 
• Provide support in identification and resolution of all incidents associated with the IT service, as directed by leadership of the DevOps team,   
• Ensure service resilience, service sustainability and recovery time objectives are met for all the software solutions delivered. 
• Responsible for automating the continuous integration / continuous delivery pipeline within a DevOps Product/Service team driving a culture of continuous improvement. 
• Keep up to date and have expertise on current tools, technologies and areas like cyber security and regulations pertaining to aspects like data privacy, consent, data residency etc. that are applicable 
• Work with industry groups/peers and vendors outside of HSBC to establish and maintain HSBC's involvement and influence in the engineering space. 
• Promote innovation and adoption of cutting edge specialist technologies and practices with the domain and across HSBC 
• Work with the Engineering Practice to promote development of engineers through coaching, and mentoring. 
• Identify as an authority for specific engineering disciplines providing steer/assistance to programmes or projects that require it.  
• Increase expert knowledge for every key Platform and Software Technology. Via internal training plans, Internal Coaching and mentoring and a “multiyear” organisation and hiring strategy. 
• Create a vibrant Engineering Culture and work with the engineers on the ground to set priorities. Teams need to feel empowered and part of the prioritisation discussion.

Requirements

•  “Hands on” engineering background (10-15 years) with experience in an individual contributor engineering role (as opposed to a people manager with experience in engineering teams)
• Proven track record in maintaining latest technical skills  
• Experience in working Agile environment with a strong focus on developing engineering solutions
• Proven ability to improve developer productivity – through automation and advanced technical skills
• Strong leadership skills, team-builder and influencer
• Exposure and success working within a global matrix organization model
• Proven track record in effective stakeholder management 
• Gravitas and ability to interact with and advise senior executives
• Ability to think laterally and innovatively and find creative solutions, with a proactive approach to problem solving and delivery
• Ability to understand business issues and devise solutions that deliver results, constructing fresh approaches where appropriate and making connections to other issues
• Able to work within an ambiguous environment, prioritize and reconcile competing demands and resolve complex issues
• Great attention to detail and an ability to identify and manage risk
• Highly experienced in getting the best out of people at various levels
