We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Principal Engineer.

Business: Wholesale Technology

Principal responsibilities 

• Provide technical leadership across the end-to-end delivery and run lifecycle, utilising skills, and expertise to carry out software development, testing and operational support activities typically being deployed to resolve the most challenging and/or impactful projects or deliveries.
• Have an excellent understanding of technology in multiple domains, using this knowledge to drive forward thinking solutions and develop the most appropriate solutions.
• Help to define and engineer the direction and strategy of holistic Digital solutions with the key sponsors that include the architects, engineering heads, and business product owners.
• Establish a digital environment and automate processes to minimize variation and ensure predictable high-quality code and data.
• Understand and promote the importance of supportability of solutions – availability, performance, monitoring and incident response.  
• Work with Ops, Dev and Test Engineers to improve their skills in building faster, simpler, and cheaper service.
• Provide support in identification and resolution of all incidents associated with the IT service, as directed by leadership of the DevOps team.
• The ability to choose the “right tool for the job”.  Keep up to date and have expertise on current tools, technologies and areas like cyber security and regulations pertaining to data privacy, consent, data residency etc.
• Promote innovation and adoption of cutting-edge specialist technologies and practices with the domain and across HSBC.
• Identifies risks and opportunities, both technical and business, to ensure operational issues (performance, operator intervention, alerting, design defect related issues, etc.) are identified and addressed at all stages of a product or service release / change. 

• Expert Knowledge of development practices and technical skills across multiple domains including but not limited to Java web-based technologies (JavaScript framework, HTML, CSS) and services (REST, SOAP), XML, JSON, and Swagger, Postgres/Oracle/Mongo Databases.
• Skills and capabilities in API Architecture and API Engineering, API Gateways and Management Platforms, Cloud-native stack such as GCP.
• Operating systems – must understand Unix/Linux to a good degree of proficiency.
• Understanding of security concerns.
• Must be hands on and able to write code that can be demonstrated within the teams on the ground.
• Excellence knowledge of SDLC and DEPL, and Agile / DevSecOps engineering models, an evangelist to help mature the organization.
• Strong leadership skills, team-builder, and influencer.
