Department Profile:

The senior business manager is under the COO function within the Markets & Securities Services area of HSBC. Business Manager assists the COO to manage MSS daily operations and issues, execute business strategy, support business development, and perform tasks related to risk and control within the MSS businesses.

 An overarching purpose is to protect HSBC, its People, Clients and Financial Markets by helping safeguarding the delivery of fair outcomes to our customers and avoiding disruption of the orderly and transparent operation of Financial Markets.

Role Purpose:

The role holder will be the senior business manager for Japan MSS.

Principal Accountabilities:

Non Financial Risk Management:

  • Conduct – assist in driving the conduct agenda
  • Control – assist in driving control actions front to back
  • review new policies and standards for and on behalf of the business line
  • assist in overseeing the Risk & Control Assessments (RCAs) for the business line
  • assist in ensuring effective remediation actions in place for key issues for the business and track mitigation
  • assist in embedding regulation in the business and performing periodic analysis to remediate population gaps
  • drive control improvement including automation
  • Governance Forums – Manage and drive the MSS Business Control Committee meeting   
  • Audit Issues management - Work with key stakeholders to ensure remediation of issues raised by Assurance and Audit
  • Audit & Second Line of Defence:   Act as principal contact point for Audit & other independent functions in the second line of defence that conduct periodic surveillance and control reviews.
  • Incident handling and Reporting - Root cause analysis of internal incidents and incident report write up.
  • Escalation Point - Act as a point of escalation for stakeholders with respect to internal control issues for the region/site

Business Development:

                 Project management – assist in managing MSS projects and new business initiatives

                 Drive changes within MSS business and algin with group strategy and enhance efficiency

                 Support COO to prepare business materials or presentations

                 Help to resolve and manage business issues.

Team and Stakeholder Management:

  • Responsible for working closely with the business to promote a strong risk culture, ensuring effective communication and collaborative partnership in non-financial risk management
  • Provide on-the-job guidance and manage the junior business manager

Information

Experience, Skills and Qualifications:

  • Good knowledge of investment banking products and services in a global setting
  • Experience of risk and controls through prior experience in COO, CCO and/or Risk roles
  • Experience of interacting with and effectively influencing a wide range of people, of different levels of seniority and from different cultures
  • Excellent understanding of Conduct Risk
  • Experience of interacting confidently and influencing senior stakeholders
  • Familiarity with the HSBC controls environment would be advantageous but not essential
  • Ability to drive change and provide positive influence to achieve organisation goals
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to negotiate and work effectively with senior business leaders across business lines, functions and geographies
  • Strong analytical and project management skills to enhance procedures and controls
  • Strong problem solving and prioritization skills and be able to perform multitask under pressure with a keen eye for detail
