  • Global RBWM Retail Credit Risk manages Credit Risk associated with Retail lending products (Mortgages, Credit Cards, Loans, Overdrafts) for all countries HSBC operates in. The function is supported by several hundred analytics professionals engaged in reporting, modelling and data manipulation. As a result there are significant challenges to the effective management of data within the function requiring close cooperation with partners in RBWM and Finance.
  • The Retail Credit Risk (RCR) Data Management team is seeking a manager for Data Analysis and Modelling to support delivery of RCR regulatory and internal data projects at Global and Regional levels.

The successful candidate will :-

  • Form an integral part of the Global RCR Data Management function and will be actively involved in the definition of business requirements and implementation of data warehouse in cloud platforms.
  • Be expected to work within a global team, and show initiative in proactively overcoming obstacles to success, dealing with uncertainty and changing circumstances, project interdependencies, opportunities and risks and a complex and diverse data architecture and infrastructure / systems landscape.
  • Have the ability to multi-task priorities, be self-motivated and have a can-do attitude. They will be expected to adopt an agile and flexible approach to work and have an outstanding level of professionalism and conduct

What you’ll do: 

Principal Accountabilities: Key activities and decision making areas

Impact on the Business/Function

  • Working closely with global and regional teams to deliver data management and governance projects.
  • Support strategic modelling capabilities focused on regulatory requirements and strategic solutions on Big Data & Cloud technologies
  • Delivery of capabilities to allow the Global RBWM Risk function to enable business transformation and effectively operate data management and governance.

Customers / Stakeholders

  • Closely aligning and managing expectation of stakeholders from a Global and Regional perspective
  • Supporting the project managers, business analysts and Head of Data Management in the delivery of data projects
  • Assisting in definition of targeted benefits to stakeholders, and ensuring delivery is focused on providing business benefit(s)

Leadership & Teamwork 

  • Influencing and collaborating with stakeholders and business partners, building strong relationships to ensure consensus and influencing change outcomes. Fostering open and honest communication which anticipates stakeholder expectations.
  • Supporting and facilitating workshops across multiple geographies
  • Pragmatic decision making capability. Structured and disciplined approach with good attention to detail, this role will require a hands on approach required and willingness to take personal accountability. This will require strong analysis skills and structure to effectively apply solutions to poorly-defined problems 
  • Supporting project managers / business analysts in the preparation of project status reports, consolidating risk and issues and helping to prepare and consolidate monthly reporting packs. 

Operational Effectiveness & Control 

  • The successful candidate will form an integral part of the Modelling Data Management team and will be actively involved in the definition of business requirements, global data strategies, testing and implementation activities
  • The successful candidate will be expected to exercise independent initiative in proactively overcoming obstacles to success, dealing with uncertainty and changing circumstances, project interdependencies, opportunities and risks. 
  • The successful candidate will have the ability to multi-task priorities, be self-motivated and have a can-do attitude. They will be expected to adopt an agile and flexible approach to work and an outstanding level of professionalism and conduct.
  • Ensuring that business requirements are fully defined and signed-off by key project stakeholders. This will require working in partnership with global and regional business teams to define, validate requirements and ensure buy-in

Typical Targets and Measures

  • Delivery of project requirements in line with Business and Regulatory timetables.
  • Completion of key project documentation and deliverables (e.g. business requirements, functional design, testing strategies’)
  • Supporting successful deployment at site and Global Level with measurable business benefits
  • Delivery of a strategic modelling capability for Retail Risk
  • Adhere strictly to compliance and operational risk controls in accordance with company and regulatory standards, policies and practices
  • Adhere to IT data policies, procedures and governance framework when performing tasks so as to ensure controls are in place and departmental goals are met
  • Positive customer feedback from stakeholders at all levels
  • Evidence of effective relationship building at all levels
  • Providing accurate and complete reporting with minimal errors

Major Challenges (The challenges inherent in the role that require a continual test of the role holder’s abilities)

  • Some of the major challenges associated to RCR Data management include the following (not exhaustive):
  • Working across regions and functions; challenging regulatory time scales and managing multiple requirements.
  • Closely aligning and managing expectation of stakeholders from a Global and Regional perspective.
  • Quickly obtaining a good overall understanding of current processes and associated customer, product and risk data, in order to provide recommendations for business enhancement.
  • Influencing and collaborating with stakeholders and business partners, building strong relationships to ensure consensus and influencing change outcomes. Fostering open and honest communication which anticipates stakeholder expectations.
  • Understanding and supporting definition of targeted benefits to stakeholders, and ensuring delivery is focused on providing business benefit(s).
  • Working closely with delivery partners to shape the project deliverables, ensuring there are clear goals, benefits, scope, and governance and delivery structure.
  • Delivering measurable improvements as a direct result of project deliverables and implementation on the Data programme of work.
  • Understanding new technology directions and the evolution of the Bank’s Cloud First strategy

Role Context- (The environment and operating conditions of the role including the extent of guidance and authority)

  • Location of role is targeted to be in Bangalore/Kolkata.
  • The role holder will take direction from the Senior Data Change Manager with an Entity reporting line into the Global RBWM Risk Head of Regulatory Analytics within the GAC, Bangalore/Kolkata.
  • The role holder will be expected to support RCR managers across the markets we operate in on matters of data governance and management.

Management of Risk (Operational Risk / FIM requirements)

  • The jobholder will also continually reassess the operational risks associated with the role and inherent in the business, taking account of changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, management restructurings, and the impact of new technology.
  • This will be achieved by ensuring all actions take account of the likelihood of operational risk occurring.
  • Also by addressing any areas of concern in conjunction with line management and/or the appropriate department.

Observation of Internal Controls (Compliance Policy / FIM requirements)

  • The jobholder will also adhere to and be able to demonstrate adherence to internal controls. This will be achieved by adherence to all relevant procedures, keeping appropriate records and, where appropriate, by the timely implementation of internal and external audit points, including issues raised by external regulators.
  • The jobholder will implement the Group compliance policy by containing compliance risk in liaison with Global Head of Compliance, Global Compliance Officer, Area Compliance Officer or Local Compliance Officer. The term ‘compliance’ embraces all relevant financial services laws, rules and codes with which the business has to comply. 
  • This will be achieved by adhering to all relevant processes/procedures and by liaising with Compliance department about new business initiatives at the earliest opportunity. Also and when applicable, by ensuring adequate resources are in place and training is provided, fostering a compliance culture and optimising relations with regulators.

Role Dimensions (e.g. balance sheet size, lending/expenditure limits, size/volume of transactions, budget)

  • Retail Banking and Wealth Management Risk's (RBWM) goal is to strengthen and enable RBWM to grow its business in a profitable and sustainable way.
  • The RBWM Risk team directly contribute to the profitability of the RBWM. This includes a wide range of activities starting with setting the risk appetite through to managing the customer through the credit risk cycle.
  • RBWM Risk play a key role in ensuring RBWM products and services treat customers fairly whether sold through HSBC's global branch network, over the phone or via the web.
  • There are several thousand people globally with expertise in a variety of disciplines including: credit risk management, analytics, modelling, forecasting, underwriting, wealth management risk (including insurance and asset management) risk strategy, operational risk and collections.

Requirements

What you will need to succeed in the role:

  • The successful candidate is expected to have a good working knowledge and delivery experience preferably within a Banking MI and Data Risk systems environment.
  • roven problem solving and analytical abilities including the ability to critically evaluate information gathered from multiple sources, reconcile conflicts, decompose high-level information into details and apply sound business and technical domain knowledge.
  • Expert knowledge of data modeling approaches including Relational Modeling, Ralph Kimball Methodology, Bill Inmon’s Corporate  Information Factory, NoSQL Modeling, etc. Experience in implementing logical and physical common data models across a complex global data ecosystem is a nice to have.
  • Working knowledge of Industry Modeling frameworks especially within the banking and financial domains e.g. IBM IFW, FSDM, FSLDM
  • Sound knowledge of Relational and Non-relational Database Platforms required.
  • Practical experience in the use of Data Modeling Tools. IBM InfoSphere Data Architect preferred; working knowledge of other tools such as Erwin, PowerDesigner, E/R Studio acceptable
  • Knowledge of other programing languages like Python/Java/R/SQL/SPSS/SAS is preferable.
  • Experience of large global system infrastructure projects a business change environment and good understanding of data infrastructure and architecture would be an advantage. The latter may include exposure to solution or enterprise architecture.
  • Experience with Cloud based technologies (on AWS and/or GCP) across both cloud agnostic and proprietary tools (MATLAB, redshift etc)
  • Knowledge of ETL Processes- Extract Transform Load & Data Modelling requirements
  • Experience of process re-engineering and process management.
  • Knowledge of data governance and management principles and processes.
  • Knowledge of “Big Data” and Cloud Computing concepts and architecture.
  • Knowledge of BCBS239, IFRS-9, Stress Testing or experience of any other Banking regulatory environment is a big plus.
  • Experience in various aspects of Data Quality Management will be advantageous
  • Communicate openly and honestly. Advanced oral, written and visual communication and presentation skills - the ability to communicate efficiently at a global level is paramount.
