  • Risk Rating Systems (RRS) sub-value stream (SVS) is part of Wholesale Credit and Lending Value System (VS) and was established to address regulatory concerns and ensure regulatory compliance of ‘Risk Rating Systems’.  Capital Requirements Regulations Article 142 defines a rating system as “all of the methods, processes, controls, data collection and IT systems that support the assessment of credit risk, the assignment of exposures to rating grades or pools, and the quantification of default and loss estimates that have been developed for a certain type of exposures”.
  • The RRS function supports the design, implementation and maintenance of HSBC risk rating system at a global and regional level in order to ensure HSBC has a fully regulatory compliant set of Risk Rating Systems to underpin its credit risk taking and credit risk management processes across both first and second lines of defence.

The Opportunity:

  • The role supports the Risk Rating Systems SVS to manage operational readiness and maintenance of all risk rating systems. The role holder is typically responsible for the end-to-end ownership of various operational activities required for the monitoring, and reporting of all Wholesale Risk Rating Systems in the bank and managing expectations of the governance committees involving senior stakeholders.
  • The engagements will be cross-functional across Risk, Digital Business Services, Wholesale Credit and Lending SVS, Policy, Global Regulatory Policy & Advisory (GRPA), Finance, regional team and others encompassing following activities:
  • Enabling functionality and / or enhancements
  • Regulatory compliance related assessments, , progress tracking and reporting
  • Training, creating and updating process, controls around rating systems.
  • Provides reports to senior leadership regularly on portfolio performance and risk, model/rating system related governance forums.
  • Creating, updating and review all rating systems related documents.
  • Liaison with regional team for process, procedure and document alignment with the aspiration for global consistency.
  • Identifying risk rating system related issues, exploring and establishing root cause in order to escalate to key stakeholders for action. 

What you’ll do:

  • Understand the current rating system, landscape, functionalities, data architecture and identify future needs. 
  • Oversee the execution of business initiatives and activities in support of the RRS Target Operating Model (TOM)
  • Facilitate and support senior management decision making by the use of management information, performance information, analytics, forums, and stakeholder feedback.
  • Participation in devising and monitoring of internal governance activities
  • Investigating and seeking remedies for discrete issues which may be impacting RRS compliance
  • Proactively engage with relevant teams in Risk, Finance and Global Businesses on topics affecting risk rating systems.
  • Actively work with action owners to track, create plan & resolution to remediate gaps in HSBC’s risk rating systems as may have been highlighted in HSBC audit reports, ECB report on PSF and PRA annual CRR Attestation.
  • Responsible for updating RRS related responses for the annual CRR attestation exercise.
  • Undertake frequent trainings as well knowledge sharing sessions on various risk rating systems and creating knowledge & reusable assets.
  • Creating and maintaining a list of all rating systems - both current and target model/ rating system landscape
  • Create ‘best in class’ suggestions for operational improvements and changes which can be consistently and cost-effectively deployed.
  • Seek for standardization of systems, processes and operational models and their alignment to those of the Group and/or the Region, to generate efficiencies and economies of scale and deliver consistent high-quality service across all Businesses.
  • The role holder is expected to work with SMEs in their endeavour to provide sufficient insights to Credit Risk Control Unit (CRCU) and Risk Rating System governance about the performance of the rating process, areas needing improvement, and the status of efforts to improve previously identified deficiencies.
  • Work closely with CRCU in order to enable CRCU to keep the senior management regularly informed on various aspects (e,g; CRR, PRA rule book, ECB internal model guideline etc.) related to risk rating systems.
  • Compliance to the cadence and MI reporting to the CRCU - especially the process, template, frequency, implement process improvement using automation or other best practice solutions.
  • Responsible for maintaining the completeness, accuracy and integrity of all relevant sections of the Risk Rating System documentation (incl. RRS TOM), whilst ensuring that content is reviewed regularly for accuracy and relevance to the business.
  • Coordinate with key stakeholders to enlist their support in terms of receiving timely updates on region specific RRS policies, credit rating process, models, controls, governance, data and system architecture etc.
  • Actively undertake clearly laid down operational procedures so as to achieve zero adverse regulatory, compliance or audit issues raised.
  • Identify rating policy requirements and take up with relevant department for publishing such policies.
  • Analyzing data to identify potential risks, Management Self-Identified Issues (MSII), resolution, tracking & reporting progress, liaison with action owner etc.
  • Monitoring changes in the external environment, regulations, supervisory guidelines and related matter that could impact risk rating system and taking necessary measure to address the same.

Requirements

What you will need to succeed in the role:

  • Graduate/ Postgraduate with minimum 10-12 years of banking experience.
  • Relevant experience of 8+ years in a similar role.
  • Knowledge on Business analysis, requirements gathering and design techniques.
  • Knowledge in wholesale credit risk is required, including various aspects of credit & lending lifecycle, model development and deployment lifecycle including various regulatory aspects pertaining to credit risk.
  • Understanding of the risk and business systems typically involved, knowledge of the type of data required to build credit risk models (PD/LGD/EAD), the role of these models in managing credit risk and the key regulatory drivers for such models (e.g., Basel III)
  • Exposure to various regulatory requirements and guidelines such as Basel, CRR, PRA, EBA, ECB etc.
  • Hands on experience of working and managing credit risk rating systems, rating process, financial spreading, applicable data and control requirements, report generations.
  • An inquisitive mind who is not afraid to challenge the status quo.
  • Excellent decision making and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong team player, able to work independently, in a proactive and collegiate manner.
  • Strong and proven operational management skillsets, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have an Agile mindset with constant target to deliver more value to customers effectively and efficiently.
  • Experienced in working with global virtual teams across different geographies, culture, and time-zones.
  • Strong inter-personal skills, ability to handle conflict and manage expectations

What additional skills will be good to have?

  • FRM/PRM – Optional
  • Strong knowledge in MS-office suite, designing & capturing process mapping and similar tools.
  • Degree in Business Information Systems or a related field – Optional
  • Degree in business administration / management / economics, engineering and science - Optional
