The Opportunity:

This role will report to both CIO Hong Kong (AMH) and CIO Hang Seng. The Managing Director, Digital Platforms Lead is accountable for driving key technology deliveries, engineering excellence and strategy across both HSBC brands within Hong Kong. The role anchors digital platform delivery, scale, and transformation, while extending technical influence and standard-setting across the Greater Bay Area and China.

Owning and leading critical transformation initiatives, including re-platforming, simplification, capacity building, digitisation, and the adoption of emerging technologies (GenAI, ML, etc.), the Digital Platforms Lead builds scalable capability to protect and grow HSBC’s market leadership. This executive leads engineering managers and specialist teams, fosters innovation, and champions delivery excellence in support of the HK Pillar strategy, aligned with Group priorities.

As a senior engineering leader, this role partners with business heads across Retail, Wealth, Business Banking, and Infrastructure Functions,  leveraging our Global Technology Centres (China, India) for cross-market delivery. The Digital Platforms Lead may also represent HSBC  with regulatory bodies such as the HKMA, and participates in external industry forums and partnerships to accelerate platform capabilities.

Governance and Committee Memberships:

  • Active member of Hong Kong Technology, Asia & Middle East Technology leadership teams; participates as required in Regional OpCo, Risk Management Meetings (RMM), and Performance Reviews
  • Technology representative to local and regional regulatory forums (HKMA, industry events)
  • Partners closely with global and regional business, finance, and control functions to enable governance, review, and ongoing transformation

 

What you’ll do:

Impact on the Business

  • Lead engineering excellence, technical direction, and digital platform strategy across HSBC Hong Kong, influencing broader Asia and Greater China standards
  • Strategically own and drive major transformation programmes, including re-platforming, capacity creation, technology simplification, digitisation, and adoption of emerging technologies
  • Build scalable, resilient technology delivery and platform capability to achieve significant growth, protect market position, and support HK/China business expansion
  • Partner with business, operations, global technology centres, and C-suite to align technical vision and prioritisation with business needs and regulatory requirements

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Inspire, develop, and provide strategic leadership to teams of engineering managers and specialists, cultivating innovation, collaboration, accountability, and technical excellence
  • Champion workforce and talent initiatives for engineering, working jointly with HR and global technology centres in China/India
  • Contribute to diversity, inclusion, and high performance across engineering teams and pods

Operational Performance

  • Oversee engineering resource and cost management, supporting robust planning and optimisation for technology delivery
  • Drive service quality, platform availability, and resilience through continuous improvement and strong control
  • Build future-proof digital platform teams, elevate engineering standards, and enforce best practices in DevSecOps, agile, cloud migration, and automation

Stakeholders – Internal and External

  • Key partners: Business heads from Retail, Business Banking, Wealth, Finance, Risk, Operations, Legal, and Group Technology leadership
  • Interfaces regularly with HKMA, other regulatory bodies, and industry groups; participates in forums/events as HSBC’s senior technology representative
  • Works with global delivery centres (China, India) to enable cross-market engineering capability

Operational Effectiveness & Control

  • Champions risk management, regulatory compliance, and robust engineering discipline across HSBC Hong Kong and Asia’s technology programs
  • Supports maintenance of critical governance and Board relationships

Requirements
  • Minimum 15-20 years’ executive experience in banking, fintech, or major technology organisations, leading large-scale engineering and technology teams
  • Outstanding technical depth, leadership presence, and credibility with C-suite, Board, and regulatory bodies
  • Demonstrated success owning and delivering large, transformational programmes (platform re-engineering, legacy modernisation, digitisation, scaling China tech)
  • Strategic visionary with influential leadership style (transformational, collaborative, entrepreneurial, and accountable)
  • Track record of successful external partnership formation with industry, suppliers, and innovation forums
  • Asia regional experience preferred; proven ability to build and lead teams in the region and across culturally diverse environments
  • Fluent English required; Cantonese and Mandarin highly beneficial for stakeholder and team engagement
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Technology/Engineering or related discipline; advanced certifications desirable

  • Demonstrated mastery in advanced technologies (cloud, Core Banking, digital platforms, AI, ML, cybersecurity, API architectures)
  • Proven track record in managing complex transformation in global banking, fintech, or enterprise technology
  • Deep understanding of operating and delivering technology in highly regulated Asia/China markets
