STAR is HSBC’s strategic cloud-base platform for generating and delivering risk factor definitions, historical market data and scenarios for Value at Risk (VaR) and Expected Shortfall (ES) calculations. STAR consists of backend services and data processing pipelines combining both real-time and batch processing across large volumes of data. We work in an open, inclusive, and diverse environment, with a strong focus on innovation and delivering business value.
The STAR development team, within Global Traded Risk Technology, is looking for a Junior GCP Backend Engineer with a Java foundation to join Market Risk Tech. This role suits an engineer early in their career who wants to grow hands-on experience building reliable cloud-native backend services in an enterprise environment, supported by senior engineers and established delivery practices.

What you’ll do
    • Contribute to translating business requirements into secure, scalable, and performant backend implementations, with guidance from senior engineers and solution designs.
    • Build and enhance backend microservices and supporting data processing components (batch and/or streaming), under direction and review.
    • Implement and maintain REST APIs and service integrations with internal systems, with a focus on reliability, performance, and cost awareness.
    • Support the creation and maintenance of technical documentation (e.g., design notes, runbooks, service usage).
    • Help improve the team’s approach to logging, monitoring, alerting, error handling, and automated recovery, using agreed patterns and standards.
    • Write and maintain automated unit and regression tests, supporting a test-centric development approach.
    • Participate in code reviews, learning how to give and respond to feedback effectively.
    • Assist with modernisation of existing services and pipelines by implementing incremental improvements and addressing agreed technical debt items.

What you need to have to succeed in this role
    • Foundation in software design principles (e.g., KISS, SOLID, DRY) and willingness to apply them with support.
    • Java development experience (commercial, internship, or strong academic/personal project experience).
    • Working knowledge (or exposure) to Spring Boot and its ecosystem.
    • Exposure to building backend services that support data processing (preferred: awareness of Apache Beam concepts).
    • Experience building or consuming REST APIs.
    • Understanding of databases: relational and/or NoSQL (preferred: PostgreSQL and/or Bigtable exposure).
    • Basic understanding of DevOps and CI/CD concepts (preferred exposure: Jenkins and/or scripting such as Groovy).
    • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills and willingness to learn emerging technologies.
    • Clear communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.

What we offer
The pay range for this role is 12 000 PLN - 17 750 PLN  (monthly, gross).

Variable pay is discretionary, but influenced by Group performance, business/function performance and individual performance.
