Head of CTO Architecture and Standards 

Role purpose

We are building a new platforms organisation for HSBC and looking for an experienced infrastructure and platform architect to lead CTO architecture and standards. You will be responsible for the tools used across the Enterprise to do architecture, digitise architecture assets, and drive governance processes, as well as the overall architecture for our platforms and infrastructure.

You’ll develop business, data, software, and integrate Architecture standards. These help us manage processes and systems. You will work with business partners around the world to understand their needs – then create and build the right solution. Using consistent service patterns, you’ll make a global deployment look easy. With a focus on the future, you will also keep things simple to support and enhance ongoing development.

Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Define and execute Future State Architecture (comprising business, data and technology architecture), architecture strategy, standards and roadmaps for the domain.
  • Drive synergies across domain through consistent architecture and identify opportunities for standardisation, sharing and the reduction of complexity.
  • Introduce and govern new practices, processes, techniques, products, services, technologies and standards where needed against identified use cases, via the appropriate governance bodies, ensuring Business Strategy is realised.
  • Accountable design authority for technology decisions and leadership of the appropriate governance bodies. Responsible for leading a commercially aware architectural design practice.
  • Accountable for the identification, management and remediation of material design issues associated with major architectural activities, in a timely manner.
  • Provide full life cycle architectural guidance to development teams and ensure quality technical deliverables.

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Extensive experience in senior leadership roles across multiple businesses and functions
  • Experience of managing within a complex matrix environment, globally across cultures
Requirements

Essential Experience:

  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities with a track record of driving innovative technical solutions and continuous improvement.
  • Track record of business architecture implementation and experience of process redesign and/or process simplification in support of efficiency and transformation objectives.
  • Broad and comprehensive understanding of concepts and principles within multiple disciplines or a fast changing discipline
  • Latitude to make decisions within the objectives of HSBC global business / global function overall. Little guidance is available and role holder is expected to formulate strategy following the objectives of the business.
  • Understanding of relevant tools and platforms (e.g. cloud platforms, web technologies, client-server technologies, continuous integration and deployment), with an eagerness to learn about new and unfamiliar technologies.
  • Knowledge of technology and technology trends, and the ability to provide technology consultancy to senior business heads
  • The role requires a sound understanding of a value unit / product / region / legal entity, alongside a good understanding of the industry and the challenges and changes in the sector
  • Established industry relationships with Executives at large technology vendors
  • Experience in planning and managing significant expenditure in a complex organization
  • This role will operate in a global transformation capacity
  • This role will require detailed understanding of all business areas across the bank and relevant technology domains
  • The role will be responsible for developing thought leadership and best practice, including engagement with vendors / third parties
  • The role requires an extremely high level of interactive listening, in order to negotiate with others often at the highest level
