Global Risk is a thriving and expert risk management function supporting HSBC globally with all aspects of risk management. The team actively manages a varied and dynamic range of risk types, including security, fraud, information security, contingency, geopolitical, operational, credit, pension, insurance, market and reputation risks. All parts of the Global Risk team use their skills, insight and integrity to handle established threats and those they see emerging, acting to protect and enable HSBC to deliver sustainable growth. 

We are currently seeking a high caliber professional to join our team as Head of Risk and Compliance International Markets Asia and Risk Oversight Hong Kong

Role Purpose:

The Head of Risk and Compliance International Markets Asia and Risk Oversight Hong Kong is a double hatted role:

  • It serves as a key leadership role to provide oversight on the consistent application of the risk and compliance management framework across multiple Asia sites, including Japan, Korea and Taiwan as well as Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mauritius, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam and drive best practice sharing across the teams.  The role also serves as an escalation channel and provide counsel and advice whilst reviewing and challenging the Asia market Chief Risk and Compliance Officers / Chief Risk Officers (CRCOs / CROs) teams.
  • A key business partnering role to enable the HK Pillar to grow safely as it delivers its strategy, partnering with the regional risk and compliance functional heads to ensure effective risk identification, assessment, management, monitoring and mitigation actions as the HK business grow.  It will be the non-financial risk point of contact for HK business pillar and CIB (Asia region).  Wholesale and retail credit approvals and support will be provided via the regional wholesale and retail credit teams. Other key entities within the HK and CIB (Asia) oversight role includes IBCN, HSCI, HCTW, SLS, HPFT, HTHK.

The role will also support the CRCO, Asia & Middle East in developing a robust succession plan and talent pipeline for the AMH and Asia markets.   

Role holder’s key responsibilities:

  • Works with the regional Risk teams in HK and Risk & Compliance leadership teams in Asia markets and CIB related entities to provide oversight of the risk management framework to enhance, standardise and integrate the various risk activities including the implementation of strategic projects and systems and as a partner to the business, supporting growth aspirations whilst retaining the appropriate risk management discipline to achieve the Group’s strategic goals.
  • Supports key business strategic initiatives and new business opportunities whilst managing execution risks.
  • Provides risk stewardship to the HK Pillar and Asia markets.
  • Works with the market CRCOs/CROs for interlock and supports interlock for CIB and related entities. 
  • Fosters a strong risk and control and compliance culture, including ensuring adequate management focus and demonstrative “tone from the top” 
  • Strengthens the Group’s, Regions’ and Global Businesses’ knowledge of risk and compliance management by incorporating risk and compliance considerations in all activities undertaken to protect and enable the business’ activities through a robust risk management understanding.
  • Develops, monitors and communicates Risk and Compliance strategy, policies and appetite throughout the Asia markets leading strategic direction for setting industry standards for Risk and Compliance, its challenges, and opportunities to ensure that the Group satisfies the requirements of stakeholders.
  • Maintains cost discipline and achieve efficiencies where appropriate.
  • Acts in accordance with HSBC’s purpose and values, being cognizant of all applicable local legal, fiscal, regulatory and shareholder requirements as they relate to the Compliance sub- function and the operations of HSBC.
  • Champions a culture that prioritizes the fair treatment of all customers, including particular attention to those who are vulnerable or have changing needs, whilst also ensuring that governance, processes and systems support staff to meet the needs of all customers.
  • An active and engaged member of the market senior leadership team, supporting the effective management of the business
  • Creates a high performing and diverse senior leadership team, underpinned by robust succession planning and development of leadership capabilities.
  • Works collaboratively with other senior executives in Global Line of Businesses, Group Infrastructure, Geographies and countries to define strategies, plans and priorities for Risk and Compliance in support of the Group strategy.
  • Ensures effective relationships with key stakeholders both within and external to HSBC, increasing connectivity and originating new productive relationships.
  • Implements the Group’s performance management and reward strategies, promoting sustainable business growth and allocating rewards that align to responsible risk and compliance management.
  • Demonstrate courageous integrity to enable smart risk taking and support business to grow safely.
Requirements

Essential Experience:

  • A high level of professional competence which helps to determine solutions around appropriate risk measures, risk processes, risk monitoring and management.
  • Working across all levels of the organisation to understand cross-functional linkages and interdependencies, as well as the implications of risk at both a strategic level and at the business unit level.
  • Remains up-to-date on latest industry developments (e.g. technology, regulatory); enable teams to incorporate improvements to drive towards operational excellence.
  • Identifies major changes in global / regional / country-specific regulatory / statutory norms and ensure these are implemented.
  • Understands impact of macroeconomic trends, continuously adapting the Compliance sub-function’s support and activities based on risk, business needs and Group’s strategy.

The chosen candidate for this role will be required to undergo enhanced vetting. Subject to local laws, this will require the individual to satisfactorily pass a series of additional checks as part of the recruitment process and on an ongoing basis, if appointed to the role.
