The Opportunity:

  • The Financial Crime (FC) Detection & Digital Enablement CoE is an integral part of the HSBC group’s Financial Crime function. The CoE helps detect and mitigate FC Risks across HSBC group and regions through conceptualization, development, deployment and maintenance of FC Detection solutions. FC risk is a non-financial risk that includes fraud, money laundering, bribery and corruption, sanctions violations, terrorist financing, proliferation financing, export control violations and tax evasion.
  • We are seeking a skilled Financial Crime Risk Modeler to develop, manage, and maintain financial crime risk assessment models. The role involves end-to-end model lifecycle management, including development, validation, governance, and monitoring of models used for financial crime risk assessment. The ideal candidate will work closely with compliance, risk, data science, and technology teams to ensure robust model performance and adherence to regulatory expectations.

What you’ll do:

Model Development & Enhancement:

  • Design and develop statistical, machine learning, or rule-based models for financial crime risk assessment, covering areas such as AML (Anti-Money Laundering), fraud, Antibribery and Corruption, Terrorist Financing, sanctions, etc.
  • Identify risk factors and develop methodologies for quantifying financial crime risk across various business lines.
  • Utilize appropriate modeling techniques, including logistic regression, decision trees, anomaly detection, and network analytics.
  • Work with large datasets to extract insights, engineer features, and improve model performance.

Model Governance & Compliance:

  • Ensure models comply with internal governance policies and external regulatory requirements
  • Prepare and maintain model documentation, including methodology, assumptions, data sources, and validation results.
  • Engage with model validation and internal audit teams to support independent model review and challenge processes.

Model Monitoring & Performance Management:

  • Develop model monitoring frameworks to assess ongoing model effectiveness, stability, and potential biases.
  • Conduct periodic performance reviews and recalibrate models to align with evolving risk patterns and regulatory requirements.
  • Generate model performance reports and communicate findings to senior stakeholders.

Stakeholder Management & Collaboration:

  • Work closely with financial crime compliance, business risk teams, and IT to integrate models into operational processes.
  • Provide technical guidance to risk and compliance teams on model interpretation and usage.
  • Support regulatory reporting and examinations by providing necessary model-related information.
Requirements

What you will need to succeed in the role:

  • Experience in developing and managing statistical/ rule based / ML models.
  • Proficiency in statistical programming languages such as Python / SQL.
  • Strong understanding of model risk management frameworks and governance practices.
  • Experience with data manipulation, feature engineering, and working with structured/unstructured data.
  • Ability to communicate complex model concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • 5+ years of experience.

What additional skills will be good to have?

  • Experience in banking, financial services, or regulatory environments.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-based data platforms like GCP
  • Familiarity with machine learning frameworks and any visualization tool like Qlik sense.
