The Opportunity:

  • The Senior Credit Underwriter is responsible for performing underwriting for UK customers. The incumbent is expected to critically and holistically assess and verify Unsecured/Secured applications for salaried/self-employed customers within approved policies, procedural guidelines, within stipulated Service Level Agreements. Conduct prescribed due diligence of financial documents to determine customer affordability and suggest recommendations to team mangers/business. Ensure comprehensive checks on an application before the Bank’s decision to lend to a customer, keeping in mind local market knowledge.
  • In addition to underwriting complex applications, the incumbent will also act as an SME (subject matter expert) responsible for supporting the credit underwriters in handling complex scenarios, escalations, complaints, referrals, training,etc. The role also includes performing audit samplings to validate the quality of approvals and ensure adherence to policies and procedures. The role plays a critical part in coaching, trend identification, and continuous improvement across the business/organization.

What you’ll do:

To contribute to the credit decision process for secured and/or unsecured lending:

  • To critically and holistically assess and verify unsecured/secured applications for salaried/self-employed customers within approved policies, procedural guidelines, within stipulated Service Level Agreements.
  • Conduct prescribed due diligence of financial documents to determine customer affordability and suggest recommendations to team mangers/business.
  • Ensure comprehensive checks on an application before the Bank’s decision to lend to a customer, keeping in mind local market knowledge.
  • Measured by structured controls set within Underwriting Services, such as but not limited to M1 and M2 reviews, Policy Exceptions, Outcomes Testing, and timely completion of Underwriter Accreditation.

Ensure policy compliance and credit quality:

  • Ensures consistency in application of credit policies and adherence to underwriting procedures through independent reviews of applications (BAU and non-BAU M1 checks).

Support capability and upskilling of underwriters:

  • Supports complex credit reviews, clarifies policies, and provides hands-on case guidance.
  • Investigates and resolves escalated cases in a timely, customer-sensitive and policy-aligned manner.
  • Delivers case clinics, coaching sessions, targeted training.
  • Guides new hires and underwriters who are new to skill during accreditation.
  • Monitor feedback scores and performance uplift.

Support change initiatives and process improvement:

  • Participates in UATs, pilots, and project roll-outs.
  • Follow-through on changes delivered to the team.
  • Measured by the success of the change roll-out.

Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities (e.g., for Business, Customers and Stakeholders; internal control environment, etc.)

  • Meet and exceed PLA and KPI targets (Quality, RPH and Operating Efficiency). Maintain strict adherence to schedule.
  • Ensures applications are assessed and verified consistently, objectively, with uniform application of policy, procedure and guidelines.
  • Ability to be flexible and willing to change along with changes in corporate and department objectives in addition to recommending changes to assist in meeting these objectives.
  • Contribute for continuous process improvement to reduce the cost and enhance the end customer experience.
  • Participate actively in employee development activities like coaching/feedback.
  • Mandatory and other training completion and performance to be owned by self.
  • To be aware of the Operational Risk scenario associated with the role and ensure that all actions align to mitigate the same.
  • Conduct self-assessment and make informed decisions that protect HSBC values, reputation and business.
  • Identify and inform line management of potential risks within the process.

Leadership & Teamwork:

  • Work closely with stake holders in delivering the strategy
  • Liaise with team/frontline for effective resolution of discrepancies 

Governance and Committee Membership:

  • Be an active part of Internal committee (by self-nomination)
  • Engage actively in the GSC site committee activities where applicable.

Major Challenges (The challenges inherent in the role that require a continual test of the role holder’s abilities)

  • Navigating multiple systems, policies, and procedures across different brands. Adapting to variations in underwriting platforms, risk appetite, and documentation standards while ensuring consistency and quality.
  • Managing time-sensitive escalations and complaints without compromising credit discipline. Balancing turnaround expectations with the need for thorough, policy-aligned resolutions.
  • Balancing technical case support with operational and project responsibilities. Managing bandwidth while
  • supporting live cases, process updates, and initiatives like M1 reviews or training sessions.
  • Working with the new Staff and helping them come up the learning curve as per timelines

Management of Risk (GHR / FIM requirements)

  • To abide by the Group Compliance Policy by containing compliance risk in conjunction with the relevant Compliance Department.  The term compliance embraces all relevant laws, rules and codes which business has to apply.
  • To continually re-assess the operational risks inherent in the business, taking account of changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures, management restructures, and the impact of new technology in conjunction with the donor Group companies.

Observation of Internal Controls (GHR / FIM requirements)

  • To maintain HSBC internal control standards, including the timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators.
Requirements

What you will need to succeed in the role:

Education / Relevant Experience / Other Qualifications 

  • At least 2 years of UK underwriting experience (PLA required) - Essential
  • Strong knowledge of credit policies, risk appetite frameworks, and documentation standards
  • Experience in performing quality reviews - Preferable
  • Strong problem-solving skills, especially in complaints and escalation resolution
  • Excellent communication, with ability to explain complex credit matters
  • With existing lending authority - Essential
  • Coaching or team mentoring background

Functional Knowledge:

  • Awareness of the types and nature of credit products and processes.
  • Understanding of Credit life cycle.
  • A Graduate in any discipline. (Preferable in commerce)
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communications, financial and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal/external customers by maintaining good call quality in accordance to Call Monitoring/ Call Coaching standards. (where applicable)
  • Acquire exhaustive knowledge on process, procedures and Credit policies and upgrade the knowledge on an ongoing basis.

Others:

  • Maintain nil complaints and Operational loss.
