Digital Business Automation is a global function within HSBC’s Chief Technology Office, comprising approximately 280 staff members located worldwide. We are tasked with defining and executing strategies for several critical products across the organisation, ensuring their availability, recoverability, and security.

This position is for an Observability Engineer within the Engineering team, responsible for supporting products with multiple instances across various countries. We are accountable for and support numerous Important Business Services within the organisation.

What you’ll do
    • Design, deploy, and maintain observability solutions using AppDynamics, Splunk, and OpenTelemetry.
    • Develop and implement monitoring, logging, and tracing strategies for distributed applications and microservices.
    • Create and maintain dashboards, alerts, and reports to provide actionable insights for engineering and operations teams.
    • Collaborate with Product Engineering, Service Delivery and SRE teams to define observability requirements and best practices.
    • Stay current with industry trends and emerging observability tools and practices.
    • Adhere to HSBC policy, procedures, and control requirements applicable to day-to-day working.

What you need to have to succeed in this role
    • Hands-on experience with AppDynamics and Splunk in enterprise environments.
    • Strong knowledge of OpenTelemetry and distributed tracing concepts.
    • Proficiency in instrumenting applications for metrics, logs, and traces.
    • Familiarity with scripting or programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, Go).
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Fluency in written and spoken English and be comfortable working in a multi-cultured/global environment. 
    • A strong level of IT literacy, including a broad knowledge of IT infrastructure (operating systems, networking, security).
    • Proven Agile delivery experience; able to operate both autonomously and collaboratively in diverse global teams.

Nice to have
    • Experience with other observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Elastic Stack).
    • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines
    • Test-driven development experience 
    • Good Knowledge of Unix/Linux and Windows
