We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of HBCE Senior ESG Reporting Manager
Business: Finance Function
Principal responsibilities
- The role focus on assessment and execution of new requirements and process improvement.
- Drive the design, execution and documentation of HBCE’s disclosure and related controls to ensure consistent, reliable and accurate reporting of non-financial data. This includes but is not limited to:
- Understand, manage and regularly update the senior HBCE management on the disclosure requirements of all ESG reporting regimes such as European Central Bank’s expectations on climate related disclosures for HBCE, EU Taxonomy, EBA Pillar 3, and other relevant ESG requirements
- Analyse and operationalize the delivery of new regulations.
- Drive enhancements in the existing process.
- Oversee and provide support where relevant to address data challenges with Data Architecture Office and Finance Change Delivery teams
- Involvement in supporting the wider HSBC climate strategy and implications for HBCE.
- Support/consult/engage with key stakeholders in HBCE and Group.
- Oversee the production of external ESG disclosures for HBCE and other entities where relevant, including ensuring robust governance and sign off prior to publication
- Develop and manage the verification and assurance process to ensure the quality of external reporting.
Impact on the business
Play a lead role in:
- Analyse and support to develop an implementation plan related to new regulation requirements
- Driving continuous improvement by suggesting ideas and supporting delivery of optimisation and improvement of ESG processes.
- Coordinating the production of external HBCE ESG disclosures;
Customers / stakeholders
- Build trusted relationships with contributors in the business and function areas to facilitate robust, balanced and informed reporting;
- Work closely with Group Regulatory Policy to understand and interpret ESG disclosure requirements
- Build effective relationships with other relevant stakeholders as needed (e.g. Sustainability, Strategy, Risk, and Financial & Regulatory Reporting);
- Assist in resolving senior management queries for HBCE;
- Participate in local and regional industry forums, as appropriate on ESG disclosures;
- Act as a point of contact coordinating external auditor assurance reviews over ESG disclosures.
Leadership and teamwork
- There will be increasing need to expand and enhance the ESG disclosures and data solutions as ESG disclosure requirements continue to evolve. This requires to work collaboratively with teams across the businesses and functions to drive action and deliver high quality reporting.
- Support and escalate where required
Operational effectiveness and control
- Maintain awareness of industry and regulatory developments in Europe ESG disclosure requirements.
- Support and drive for strong controls around data integrity and accuracy for all ESG reporting.
- Lead on the external assurance engagement across all ESG related disclosures.
- Lead project and operational management of HBCE ESG reporting deliverables and processes, including maintenance of process and assurance documentation.
Major challenges (inherent challenges, requiring continual testing of the role holder’s abilities)
- There is a significant amount of senior stakeholder management which requires the role holder to build strong relationships across the bank and carefully manage potential differing views or issue resolution.
- The project management skills will be required to manage a large number of topics and contacts across the bank to produce ESG reporting related sections in the annual report. An ability to work under pressure and prioritise deliverables is very important
- New ESG reporting requirements may be unclear, and may require the role-holder to exercise judgement on how these should be met.
- ESG is an evolving space and growing priority for the bank and its stakeholders. The role-holder will need to keep up with the external environment while ensuring consistency with HSBC’s external messaging
Role context (environment and operating conditions, including extent of guidance and authority)
- HBCE Senior ESG Reporting Manager sits in Global Finance.
- The role will interact closely with the Group ESG Reporting team, Group Regulatory Policy, external auditors and other key stakeholders
Risk management (operational risk / FIM[1] requirements)
- Assess the operational risks associated with the role, taking account of changing market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, changes in the bank’s management structure and the impact of new technology.
Ensure that:
- All decisions and actions take account of the likely operational risk implications;
- Areas of concern are addressed promptly in conjunction with line management and/or the appropriate department.
Observation of internal controls (compliance policy / FIM requirements)
- Maintain HSBC’s internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit issues and any issues raised by external regulators.
- Understand, follow and demonstrate compliance with all relevant internal and external rules, regulations and procedures that apply to the conduct of the business in which you are involved, specifically Internal Controls and any Compliance policy including the Group Compliance policy
Role dimensions (e.g. balance sheet size, lending/expenditure limits, size/volume of transactions, budget)
- Coordinating the production of HBCE ESG related disclosures
- Analysing and operationalizing the delivery of upcoming new regulations
- Ensuring that European ESG mandatory requirements are being met through our disclosures;
- Ensuring there is a robust verification/assurance process maintained for ESG disclosures and coordinating the external assurance
- Minimum 10 years’ experience within Finance at a major institution, ideally with experience of quantitative and qualitative data analysis and new reporting requirements.
- Knowledge and experience in Pillar 3 and EU Taxonomy is preferable though not essential.
- Commercial outlook – able to connect numbers, performance drivers and ‘real world’ events.
- Knowledge of HSBC’s business strategy, operations and structure.
- Highly-motivated, diligent, collaborative, personable and capable of working independently and exercising judgment.
- Project management skills, including creating lean processes and governance structures.
- Strong people and communication skills – able to develop and articulate a viewpoint when working with a broad range of stakeholders.
- Able to prioritise tasks, resolve problems and respond effectively to emerging issues.
- Able effectively to work effectively within a complex, global organisation.
- Quantitative degree, ideally with professional education in Finance

- Strong skills in Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
- Fluent English (written and spoken).
