The Finance teams at HSBC provide the bank with internal and external financial reporting, forecasting, controls oversight and stress testing expertise. Specialist areas also manage HSBC’s worldwide tax affairs, group treasury needs, and events for investors and analysts.

This role will have overall responsibility for tax matters relating to Australia and New Zealand covering all first line tax risks and second line obligations. The role will report to the CFO, Australia and NZ but will also require significant engagement/escalation reporting to the Head of Tax, Asia and MENAT. The key areas of responsibility include corporate tax reporting, tax compliance, and business governance and support activities, including being a subject matter expert on Australia and NZ tax matters.


Responsibilities:

  • Responsible as first line of defence (FLOD) for corporate tax reporting and compliance as well as indirect tax filing.
  • Responsible for maintaining an open and transparent relationship with the Australian Tax Office (ATO).
  • Responsibility for second line of defence (SLOD) activities relating to Client Tax Reporting, including provision of subject matter expertise in relation to local and global client tax reporting obligations such as CRS and FATCA.
  • Day to day liaison with local stakeholders on tax issues, including acting as Risk Steward where Tax is SLOD, and escalating issues where additional judgement is required.
  • Prepare analysis of business area(s) and provide tax focused recommendations to mitigate identified risks, with appropriate judgement as to escalation of risks to finance/tax management.
  • Ensure that tax matters have been appropriately considered and that recommendations and implications are clearly understood and implemented by relevant Business and Functional personnel.
Requirements

Requirements:

  • Qualified tax professional with expertise in Australian tax laws. A degree or post-graduate award in accounting or law or a relevant area other than accounting in addition to relevant experience (see below).
  • Significant years of proven corporate, international and operational tax knowledge and experience
  • In house tax experience, preferably gained in another Financial Services institution (alternatively, in-house tax experience and FS Tax experience gained in a Big Four firm)
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, time sensitive multi-engagement environment with varying deliverables and changing requirements
  • Strong focus on solving complex tax queries and is able to deal effectively with stakeholders on a day-to-day basis
  • Good judgement about timely escalation of tax risks/issues to Finance/Tax management.
  • Self-starter with excellent analytical, organisational and time management skills.
  • Ability to utilise technology to improve reporting processes and controls.
  • Excellent analytical, research, organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills.


Preference will be given to candidates who hold Australian PR/Citizenship or New Zealand Citizenship, or who can demonstrate current unrestricted work rights in Australia without limitations.
