Digital Legal Services plays an important role in protecting the Bank’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing specialist legal advice to senior management and all businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate in MENAT.

We are currently seeking an ambitious individual to join our Digital Legal Services team, working together with colleagues to define, manage and achieve divisional business targets.

Role Overview:
The Legal Counsel provides expert and professional legal advice, guidance and support to ensure that the legal and reputational risks faced by  areas relating to Digital & Data are identified, reported and mitigated. This role will typically report to  the Associate General Counsel, Head of Digital & Data MENAT.

Duties & Responsibilities:
•    As part of the Digital Legal Services team and supporting the Associate General Counsel, provide specialist advice and guidance to the business and function in relation to all Digital & Data risks within the Region, including data privacy, bank confidentiality, data transfer and storage, data security, cyber security, outsourcing, cloud, digital assets and currencies, open finance, artificial intelligence, metaverse, nft, intellectual property and digital signatures. 
•    Execute against relevant policies and procedures for the relevant area of coverage to ensure that Legal's role in the second line of defense can be executed
•    Advising relevant Management on non-standard legal and reputational risks
•    Evaluating and responding to changes in legal and regulatory requirements as they arise
•    Provide legal advice, that is prompt, succinct, easy to understand, and adds value by identifying the root cause of the problem and seeing the ‘bigger picture’
•    Provide commercially sensitive, pragmatic and practical guidance and support to relevant businesses in relation to digital and data related legal risks in a cost-effective manner
•    Ensure that legal implications and risks of initiatives and/or complex matters are effectively communicated to and understood by the relevant business area
•    Maintain and develop positive and professional working relationships with key stakeholders, and business departments
•    Assist in the management of legal risk in relation to digital and data risks in accordance with group policy requirements, to include implementation and provision of advice to on legal and regulatory developments affecting [team/region/country/business]
•    Be a subject matter expert and provide expert legal advice in relation to digital and data.
•    Proactively maintain knowledge of and adhere to HSBC Group operations and policies

Requirements

Experience & Qualifications:

•    Hold a bachelors degree; 
•    At least 2-4 years relevant post qualification experience and confident practitioner of law in MENAT or, alternatively, with some exposure to civil law jurisdictions;
•    Knowledge and experience of the laws impacting Digital and Data risks are preferred, but not essential;
•    Experience managing, recording and documenting latest relevant laws and regulations for multiple jurisdictions;
•    Corporate experience and Compliance experience an advantage, but not essential;
•    Experience of managing and coordinating multi-jurisdictional legal advice and proven ability to deliver this in an effective and efficient manner;
•    Ability to work directly with the business and with multiple lawyers across business and functional teams and countries;
•    Communication and inter-personal skills;
•    Developing lateral thinking/problem solving skills.
