CIB Legal plays an important role in protecting the Bank’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing legal advice to senior management and business teams within CIB, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, product, transactional and jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate in MENAT.  

We're currently seeking an ambitious, proactive individual to join our CIB Legal team in MENAT based in Dubai, UAE, working together with colleagues to define, manage and achieve successful outcomes for HSBC’s CIB customers.

Role Overview:
In this role you will provide support to Corporate Investment Banking (CIB) lawyers across the MENAT region by providing professional legal guidance and support to ensure that the legal and reputational risks faced by the CIB business are identified, reported and mitigated and the outcomes of the CIB business are adequately supported. This role will report to the Managing Associate General Counsel, Head of Banking Legal, MENAT but will be required to undertake a range of tasks under the supervision of lawyers across the team.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • As part of the CIB Legal team and supporting the Managing Associate General Counsel, principal responsibity will be for review of onboarding documentation (e.g. constitutional documents, resolutions and PoAs) for our corporate customers to advise on matters of capacity, authority and attestation requirements across a number of our jurisdictions.  Engaging with onboarding teams to advise and taking responsibility for supporting the development of process improvements via enhancements to systems, processes and deployment of additional technology.
  • Supporting the CIB lawyers on a range of legal queries esclated by the CIB business as part of client management and account support which necessitates a review of templates, letters and correspondence often received from regulatory authorities.
  • Managing the process of review of impact assessment of new laws and regulations as they arise effecting the CIB business and other areas that the legal team support.
  • Supporting our lawyers across the MENAT legal team with template contract management tasks including the review and amendment of template documents alongside external counsel, implementation of changes within the document automation journeys and providing Arabic translations where appropriate.
  • Supporting our lawyers on management of distressed loan enforcement and smaller contentious disputes or complaints where those impact the CIB business.
  • Execute against relevant policies and procedures for the relevant area of coverage to ensure that Legal's role in the second line of defence can be executed
  • Opportunities to provide a leading role on broader CIB business projects or initiatives that requires coordinating multiple lawyers and actions across the legal function to achieve the desired business outcomes
  • Provides proactive legal support, that is prompt, succinct, easy to understand, solution focused and adds value by identifying the root cause of the problem and seeing the ‘bigger picture’.
  • Provide commercially sensitive, pragmatic and practical guidance and support to relevant businesses in a cost-effective manner.
  • Ensure that legal implications, together with any reputational, conduct and other risks of initiatives and/or complex matters are effectively communicated to and understood by the relevant business area
  • Support the management of legal risk in CIB, to ensure that the interests of the HSBC Group are adequately protected.
  • Develop and maintain positive and professional working relationships with key stakeholders, business departments members of the MENAT and CIB legal teams and external panel firms.
  • Proactively maintain knowledge of and adhere to HSBC Group operations and policies.
Requirements

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • A Bachelors degree in Law is required. 
  • Fluent in Arabic (Written and Spoken) is essential. 
  • Experience of the practice of law within the MENAT region obtained within a law firm or similar professional services firms or financial institution preferred
  • Understanding of common corporate structures of entities within the UAE and broader MENAT region where HSBC operates together with local court and regulatory requirements is preferrable 
  • Knowledge and experience of the laws and regulations impacting the UAE and broader region;
  • Experience managing, recording and documenting latest relevant laws and regulations for multiple jurisdictions;
  • Experience of drafting or amending basic legal contracts an advantage  
  • Corporate experience and compliance experience an advantage
  • Experience of leading, managing and coordinating multi-jurisdictional projects and proven ability to deliver this in an effective and efficient manner;
  • Ability to manage and prioritise different workloads for different businesses and teams is important as is the ability to collaborate directly with the business and with multiple lawyers across business and functional teams and countries using appropriate methods of communication;
  • Individual who takes personal ownership of delivery of their responsibilities, their personal development and embraces new technologies, digitization and innovation.
