Global Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all global businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience, and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.
We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a Senior Legal Counsel.
Principal Responsibilities
The Employment, Benefits and Incentives team (EBI) provides expert and professional legal advice to colleagues across HR and the various HSBC business lines globally, helping to support growth and shape policy whilst managing risk. This role will report into Asia Employment, Benefits and Incentives Legal Team, and will be based out of Hong Kong.
In this role you will
- Partnering with HR and EBI Legal colleagues across the global team to support projects which are either led by HR (typically policy initiatives), or by EBI Legal (typically projects driven by legislative change)
- Manage a predominantly Asia-based caseload, providing legal advice, guidance and support to the Asia ER and HR departments working as part of the Employment, Benefits and Incentives Legal team to ensure that the Bank’s exposure to legal risk is managed
- Be a trusted adviser to the Bank by ensuring that commercially sensitive, pragmatic and practical legal support and advice is provided in a cost-effective manner
- Apply learnings from cases and evaluate changes in legal and regulatory requirements to recommend enhancements and improvements to processes and policies, and partnering with HR to drive necessary change
- Help manage external legal spend and support/drive productive, efficient and focused relationships with external providers
- Develop and maintain positive and professional working relationships with Employment Lawyers and General Counsels across the region, as well as internal stakeholders from other functions
To be successful you will need
- Qualified Lawyer
- Practice experience and familiarity with the employment law in the Asia jurisdictions, particularly Hong Kong
- Experience of working with financial services clients an advantage, but not essential – although a keen interest in the industry and curiosity to learn more about the multijurisdictional and regulatory environment is a pre-requisite
- Ability to prioritise, often flexibly against the backdrop of changing facts and stakeholder demands
- Very strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong lateral thinking/problem solving ability with forward-leaning proactive approach
