We are currently seeking a highly qualified and motivated individual to join our Global Banking team in Japan, to lead the bank’s coverage of existing and new institutional client relationships in Japan.  The role centres on making meaningful contributions towards the deepening of client relationships, delivering the bank’s capabilities and solutions to clients, helping the firm to better understand local market dynamics, and driving growth and profitability in the firm’s institutional client business.  Through the execution of well-considered business development activities, the individual will help the firm to offer institutional clients an outstanding and unique value-additive client experience.

Team Description

The Institutional Client Group (ICG) is a global coverage function responsible for managing HSBC’s relationships with a wide spectrum of institutional clients, including asset managers, funds and public sector organizations.  The team works closely with product partners across the firm, primarily those in Global Banking & Markets, including Markets & Securities Services, Investment Banking (including Corporate Finance Coverage), Structured Finance, Real Asset Finance, Global Payment Solutions, Global Trade & Receivables Finance and Issuer Services.  ICG also collaborates actively with partners in other areas of the bank, including Wealth and Personal Banking (e.g. Asset Management, Global Private Banking).

About the Job

The individual will be responsible for covering and managing the firm’s relationships with institutional clients in Japan, originating new business, collaborating with product partners, extending and managing credit exposures, and monitoring and protecting the firm against financial crime and other risks.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading coverage of key institutional client relationships in Japan, encompassing both local relationships as well as inbound multinational relationships
  • Coordinating the delivery of HSBC’s product and services to clients, whether locally or on a cross-border basis
  • Identifying prospect relationships and continuously exploring the dynamic opportunities arising from within the client portfolio
  • Identifying client needs and crafting solutions, mobilizing partners across the firm to inform, present, design and deliver solutions for clients, leveraging the full spectrum of the products and services offered by Global Banking and Markets, and other parts of the firm
  • Working closely with internal stakeholders to ensure that transactions are appropriately understood, analysed, supported and recorded, balancing risk and return, and ensuring compliance with the full scope of internal and external (incl. regulatory) requirements, while safeguarding the bank against reputational damage or material loss
  • Developing a thorough understanding of the client base and ensuring the firm’s strategic and business objectives are achieved
  • Driving revenue generation against targets, while ensuring product alignment, customer satisfaction, cost containment and development and training of more junior staff
  • Developing and maintaining effective and beneficial relationships with individuals at the client, as well as internally within HSBC
  • Acting as the “First Line of Defence” to protect HSBC against Financial Crime and other risks, while ensuring credit/market risks arising from transactions and interactions with the market/clients is managed prudently and effectively at all times
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Extensive experience in, and strong knowledge of, international banking and financial markets, with a particular focus on fixed income, foreign exchange, credit, asset management and custody
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as a senior relationship manager, as applicable to sophisticated professional multinational financial and institutional clients, with a track record of C-Suite engagement and ability to achieve trusted advisor status, and a superior ability to identify client needs and opportunities and design and deliver solutions to clients in tandem with product partners
  • The ability to form effective relationships and exercise influence at the most senior levels of the client organization, as well as, internally, within HSBC
  • A strong understanding of financial and non-financial risk management
  • Knowledge of how to perform in-depth reviews and analysis of industry structures, competitive dynamics, digital innovation, regulation and new products, in order to produce effective business plans and proposals
  • The ability and an eagerness to adhere to the highest levels of integrity, and act as a role model among colleagues, upholding all HSBC values and business principles
  • The drive to consistently sustain a commitment to excellence and a desire to perform to the highest standards
  • The ability to communicate in both English and Japanese (speaking, reading and writing)
  • Experience and success as a people manager is a plus
