We are currently seeking a high caliber professional to join our team as Director, Insurance Coverage.
Role Purpose
This role is a key senior leadership position within Institutional Clients business, reporting to the Regional Head of Insurance, Asia. The person in this role will functionally manage a team of Insurance coverage bankers in Southeast Asia. The role is client and market facing. As such it requires the role holder to be recognised as an industry expert who provides valuable market and sector-related insight to both internal and external stakeholders. The person in this role is expected to interact extensively with clients, sales teams, management teams, CIB businesses, product partners and support groups to drive both the Asia Managed and Inbound Insurance business forward.
Principal Accountabilities:
Leadership / Supervisory
- The role is responsible for delivering sustainable and profitable across the Asia Insurance portfolio; this needs to be done in alignment with wider Group strategy and within constraints of other targets including but not limited to RoRWA, RWAs, balance sheet usage, and appropriate management of financial and non-financial risk.
- Create an inclusive and customer-centered culture across the region by setting expectations, sharing best practices and managing, monitoring, coaching and developing coverage bankers covering Insurers in South East Asia to maximize performance and positively impact client outcomes.
- The role is client and market facing. As such it requires the role holder to be recognised as an industry expert who provides valuable market and sector-related insight to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure all audit, legal and regulatory and supervisory requirements are adhered to, including conduct, compliance, policies and procedures with a particular focus on managing financial crime and credit risk.
Strategy
- Contribute to the development of and implementation of an Insurance strategy for South East Asia within the broader context of the Insurance Strategy for Asia-Pacific.
- Work with teams to implement client plans and strategies that further the business agenda and enhance revenue generation across the Insurance portfolio, whilst ensuring proper sales discipline for pipeline tracking and reporting
- Proactively develop an understanding of the clients’ business needs and identify solutions in response to the challenges that they face.
- Drive customer satisfaction and cost containment where applicable, whilst meeting the Group conduct outcomes.
- In addition to directly managing a select group of priority clients as a Global Relationship Banker, act as senior coverage banker / resource for the wider team in region to support relationships as required to win new mandates, successfully defend / service existing ones and originate new revenue streams.
- Have a high awareness of the sector and competitor activity and share with teams and stakeholders accordingly.
- Strong understanding of technology and solutions that can also be implemented to facilitate change and efficiency of the business.
Collaboration
- Drive collaboration with other internal coverage teams in South East Asia
- Understand all products and services and collaborate with key product and business partners (GPS, MSS, GTS, AMG and other product teams in banking) to meet client needs. Close collaboration with these teams is required to unlock synergies and grow the overall revenues for the Group.
Conduct, Risk Management, Controls, Regulation and Operational Effectiveness
- Accountable for financial and non-financial risk, including credit, operational and reputational risk for Insurance clients.
- Deliver fair outcomes for our customers and ensure our conduct maintains the orderly and transparent operation of financial markets.
- A core element of the Group strategy is to prevent financial crime (e.g. Anti-Money Laundering and Sanctions Controls). As such the standards and ethos needs to be embedded.
- The role requires a thorough understanding of the front to back control environment and the role needs to ensure the leadership tone and operational processes uphold the highest standards of front office supervisory standards across the team.
- Important to this role is that it is forward looking in approach and ensures adequate training is prioritised.
- Manage risk within the Firm’s appetite, and implement, embed and manage appropriate risk and control frameworks in collaboration with the second and third line of defence.
- Ensure strong risk assessment, the required credit quality and requisite returns on risk.
- Lead the conduct and culture agenda, including the proactive identification and management of non-financial risk.
- Operate within the spirit and letter of internal and external regulations, laws, and policies.
- Experienced team manager with an ability to empower and motivate high performing teams. Should also have management experience ideally within a Coverage, Markets, or Investment Banking function.
- Strong understanding of macro-trends and latest industry developments within the Insurance sector, to proactively identify solutions, solve client problems and ensure HSBC remains competitive in the market.
- Knowledge of capital markets in Asia as it relates to Insurers (i.e. funding, investing, ALM), including the financial products insurers utilize to drive business and risk management.
- Strong understanding of the global regulatory and supervisory environment Insurers must navigate, including awareness on the various risk-based capital regimes taking shape across Asia.
- Extensive client relationships and proven relationship management skills with Global and Inbound Clients, including and a track record of C-Suite engagement and ‘trusted advisor’ status.
- Strong risk management skills and a good understanding of credit and financial crime risk management as well as operational risk.
- Communicates effectively to update senior management and inspire the team.
- Flexible with good time management; can carry out a number of different tasks concurrently.
