The Network Enforcement Points (NEP) Security Engineer is responsible for providing subject matter engineering, thought leadership and project delivery in relation to NEP Security control issues and initiatives. The holder of the role should have a focus on network enforcement point (both traditional firewall and host based) security products, solutions, architecture, and best practices, being able to apply those to the real-world challenges faced by HSBC as the organisation seeks to maintain and improve the network security controls required to mitigate network-based threats and risks.

This role is part of the NEP Security function within the Global Defence organisation, providing a Cybersecurity security technology expertise and engineer service to the wider HSBC organisation.

This role supports and is supported by the Head of Network Enforcement Points and the Head of Network Security, with the expectation that the NEP Security Engineer provides technical expertise and SME knowledge to the engagements and projects assigned to them, taking ownership, and driving to a successful conclusion, and supports other Cybersecurity or Connectivity Engineering team members providing coaching, guidance and leadership as needed, whilst ensuring the Head of NEP Security and the Head of Network Security are kept updated on any issues requiring support.

What you’ll do
    • Effectively prioritise the multiple requests for support.
    • Ensure adherence to network security standards and the wider cybersecurity control framework.
    • Challenge the Status Quo / Raise the bar - look for opportunities to continuously improve network security posture, promoting knowledge sharing and optimisation with the broader Cybersecurity team.
    • The complex systems and stakeholder environment.
    • Need to constructively challenge internal project teams and stakeholders (PMs, other technical SMEs) if required.
    • Work in a geographically dispersed team.
    • Work within a constantly evolving technology landscape with evolving threats and risks.
    • Work within a strongly regulated business.

What you need to have to succeed in this role
    • Detailed understanding of network design, firewalling and micro segmentation, content filtering, load balancing, DDoS, NAC, WAF, network segmentation technologies.
    • Detailed understanding of network security threats and risks.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with experience interacting with technical leaders and various layers of management.
    • Experience of guiding other colleagues and supporting their development.
    • Strong customer focus with a drive to deliver standards of service to internal clients at least equivalent to external providers.
    • Understanding of data networking principles and industry frameworks.
    • Knowledge and experience of delivery using Agile and/or DevOps methodologies
    • Knowledge and experience of IT service management principles e.g. change control, incident and problem management, resilience and business recovery planning etc.
