As a senior member of the Global Research team this role is part of our growth plan to extend our thought leadership across big themes and provide stock coverage of consumer tech stocks in the Americas to help all parts of the bank. The incumbent will be responsible for analysing and interpreting economic developments and key trends in equity markets impacting the covered stocks/sector, and providing timely views for internal/external clients. The key client base is based in Asia usually UHNIs and there will be key institutional clients & Hedge Funds in other regions. In addition to achieving own scorecard metrics, the individual will be required to work together with colleagues to manage and achieve divisional business targets. The role also encompasses leading the Mexico equity research team, which involves mentoring/training juniors and ensuring that the juniors analysts progress to become publishing analysts. Ensuring that the right type of analysts are on the platform and will progress to becoming a senior analyst is key skill set.

Principal Accountabilities

Overlay analytical skills at the stock level with a full understanding of the dynamics at play within the company/sector/region. 

Maintain a consistent flow of high quality actionable/commercial research product.

Interact with company managements and investors.

Adhere to the Equity Analyst Scorecard Metrics.

All analysts to have maintained call lists.

All interactions must be correctly logged in the CRM system (Evolve).

To actively engage with clients through meetings/calls and to advise clients whether to buy/sell or hold the underlying equity.

To work closely with Research Marketing, equity sales, sales trading, trading (market makers), to ensure dissemination of information and coordinated flow of information to clients.

Proactively improve service to clients with regular calls, meetings and service requests.

Proactively contribute to vote collection to get your team and the HSBC research department ranked in targeted external surveys.

Provide investor access for our clients.

Major Challenges

Product and idea driven – To provide best in class independent and insightful research products to our clients that are actionable and help our clients manage their portfolios.

Demonstrate unique and proprietary analysis – To analyse stocks and industries both on a local/regional and global basis in order to identify the best opportunities for clients based on their investing requirements and risk tolerances. For our analysts to utilise robust quantitative, equity strategy, and sensitivity analysis when analysing our coverage universe.

Being broad minded, open minded and curious is key to expanding our knowledge of our industries, companies and regions, as well as expanding our careers.

Able to offer our clients an independent product offering which represents the highest ethical standards based on robust analysis determined and be able to engender the support of a number of senior executives across Global Research who may have their own conflicting local pressures.

HSBC & Global research is re-entering the South African market, following an exit some years back that was not taken well but domestic clients. The ideal candidate will have existing franchise will be used to alleviate local investor concerns about our commitment to South Africa which is one of the largest markets in EM at c11% weighting.

Requirements

Stock coverage: Research coverage of requisite stocks as assigned by the Research Management. Maintain a consistent flow of high quality actionable research on covered stocks including timely updates on earning releases and any other significant events. Ensuring that there are timely updates in place for all stocks within the team’s coverage universe.

Research reports: Consistently apply sound research writing principles to produce independent research which is clear, coherent and non-consensual. Ensure research views are supported by sufficient facts and analysis and are based on publicly available information. Adhere to house structure and style. Work closely with Senior Analyst, Research Marketing, equity sales, sales trading, trading (market makers), to ensure dissemination of information and coordinated flow of information to clients.

Global Products and Thematic research: Produce thematic research on coverage as appropriate highlighting major themes and key trends, analysed and presented in great depth and detail. Drive and contribute to global products as required by global/regional Asset-class and Sector heads.

ESG integration: Actively track and highlight environment, social, governance and sustainability issues in covered companies/sector and integrate them in company performance and valuation assessments

Research communication: Proactively communicate research views to internal and external clients advising on covered sector/ stocks. Actively listen and adapt the communication style considering the audience while being open and honest.

Client service: Engage with clients through meetings/calls and to advise clients whether to buy/sell or hold the underlying equity. Respond quickly, efficiently and accurately to ad-hoc requests. Proactively seek client recognition for self and team and contribute to improving HSBC Research ranking in targeted external surveys. Establish credibility with clients as trusted advisor, promote a client-first attitude and uphold high ethical standards when dealing with clients.

Relationship management: Establish credible relationship with a range of internal and external stakeholders including clients and corporates. Improve overall engagement and be pro-active in anticipating and acting on commercial opportunities.

Sector Knowledge: Strong understanding of one or more Equity sectors managed as well as companies within their remit. Should be able to spot key trends that drive investment views on covered equity sector and companies and utilizes them to generate actionable ideas.

Financial knowledge: Overlay analytical skills with the full understanding of dynamics at play within their sector and/or companies to reflect them in the financial models and valuation concepts.

Adhere to HSBC policy, procedures and control requirements applicable to day-to-day working, exceptional and project activities, and raise any concerns about actual or potential issues promptly, in line with reporting and escalation procedures

Understand and comply with all relevant policies and procedures issued by the Group and contained within the Group Standards Manual and relevant Functional Instruction Manuals, Desk Instruction Books and Process Guides
