Global Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organization through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all global businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join this team in the role of Legal Counsel (Global Negotiations, GPS).

Role Purpose:

  • To provide negotiations support to HSBC’s Corporate and Institutional Banking business and specifically the area of Global Payment Solutions (GPS) to ensure that its legal risk is fully identified and managed, transactions are supported and escalations occur in a timely manner.

Impact on the Business

  • Under supervision of Senior Legal Counsel- GPS, provide negotiations support to the GPS business on day-to-day transactions.
  • Ensure documentation, on which the jobholder is supporting, adheres to GPS policies and procedures, to manage legal risk.
  • Use agreed channels to escalate matters where necessary to ensure the business receives timely and appropriate legal support. 

Customers / Stakeholders

  • Be proactive in the provision of negotiations-related support.
  • Ensure timely escalation to line management and, where appropriate, Global GPS Legal including Senior Legal Counsel – GPS Legal on any issues or complex / protracted matters.

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Maintain and develop positive and professional working relationships with team members within GPS Legal, GPS Implementations, Global CIB Legal, country lawyers and business departments for which the jobholder is providing support.
  • Participate effectively as part of the Global GPS Legal team the GPS Implementations function.

Operational Effectiveness & Control

  • Comply with commercial and operational risk management requirements set out in relevant policies.
  • Comply with regulatory and compliance matters and the management of operational risk.
Requirements
  • Qualified lawyer (common law jurisdiction preferable) with a minimum of 10 years post qualification banking and finance law experience.
  • Strong understanding of domestic banking and finance law and transactions. Payments experience preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of the HSBC Group corporate structures, its business and a clear understanding of HSBC’s corporate values.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage workload.
  • Ability to work independently and, where required, collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong communication and inter-personal skills.
  • Lateral thinking/problem solving.
  • Regulatory experience and an understanding of risk management is an advantage, but not essential.
