Global Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all global businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.

We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a Managing Associate General Counsel, Asia Employment, Benefits and Incentives Legal (Asia EBI Legal).

Role Background

  • The Managing Associate General Counsel - Asia Employment, Benefits and Incentives Legal provides expert and professional legal advice, guidance and support to ensure that the legal and reputational risks faced by the area of coverage are identified, reported and mitigated.
  • This role will report to 1) the Global Head of Employment, Benefits and Incentives Legal and 2) the Deputy General Counsel, Litigation, Regulatory Enforcement and Investigations, Asia and Middle East.
  • This role will be based out of Hong Kong.

Principal Responsibilities and Accountabilities 

  • Partnering with HR and EBI Legal colleagues across the global team to support projects which are either led by HR (typically policy initiatives), or by EBI Legal (typically projects driven by legislative change).
  • Advising relevant Senior Management on strategic options and legal risks, as a trusted advisor.
  • Managing a portfolio of contentious and non-contentious advisory work within the Asia region.
  • Collaborating closely with Employment Lawyers and General Counsels across the region to ensure that employment law risks are managed consistently, strategically and efficiently
  • Collaborating with internal stakeholders such as Compliance and Risk.
  • Managing a team of two Lawyers in Hong Kong and one Lawyer in India and maintaining and developing positive and professional working relationships with all team members, including by driving a high performance, inclusive culture.
Requirements

Required Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications

  • Qualified Lawyer, expected to have a minimum of 10 years’ experience
  • Practice experience and familiarity with the employment law in the Asia jurisdictions
  • Experience managing lawyers and other legal professionals
  • Chinese language capability (including read/write) would be an advantage

  • Creative thinker comfortable with rapid change and capable of dealing effectively with new and unexpected situations
  • Ability to think independently being mindful of maintaining an appropriate balance between management and mitigation of legal risk and business efficacy

  • Ability and willingness to proactively partner with all internal stakeholders to deliver strategic, pragmatic legal advice
  • Knowledge of areas of specialty with ability to take a view as to how law is developing in order to advise client and reach a solution
  • Ability to balance the need for further analysis and the need for a timely decision
  • Ability to take an enterprise-wide view of legal risk

  • Enhanced relationship management skills with senior executives, inspiring confidence of customers/stakeholders
  • Strong oral and written communication and inter-personal skills
  • Ability to navigate and influence multiple stakeholders with competing priorities and under time pressure
